We sailed a heavy old 40 foot
ketch and the relatively light loads on the
rope crucivix didn't make a dent on the
rope after a couple of thousand miles.
With a ring, the pole ends will still cross over (as with a rope crucifix we eventually found best; cheapest; lightest) but you may have problems with the axial pole loads bending the pole end fittings on the ring. This happened very quickly on the Mark 1 (expensive; heavy) version of our crucifix shown on my page here -.

Restricting the natural angles formed by the pole ends quickly destroy the fittings.
I must say here that there may be better solutions out there; just that this twizzle layout worked well for us after a bit of trial and error.
