This is a solid list.

First time with my parents 40 ago in the Bahamas we didn't have any of these items, nor GPS or frig. I look back and wonder how we had any fun.

These are good, too. You can't be in the sun all day.

And, my first sail to the Bahamas, we didn't have an autopilot, (or a chartplotter, because they hadn't been invented yet) but it was five of us and we still got tired of steering.

Chartplotters are a gift from God. So much easier boating with them.

Re: Top 3 Must Have Upgrades?

Hello all - Nariel's captain here. The boat is a 3 cabin non-charter. Thank you so much for the input and ideas. The transition to this new life is going to be an adventure of its own, not to mention everything that comes once we're there.

Of the items listed so far it has:

generator
water maker
soft enclosure including bimini/dodger for the helm
factory refridgeration
electric winches
integrated davits
good ground tackle
folding props
cabin fans
auto pilot and nav equipment
an aged dinghy that needs replacing
aged cushions that will need replacing soon

Of the items listed so far, my list in loose order is:

Anything impacting reliability that the survey reveals
Master mattress and sheets
Live with it a while to see what life is like ...
New dinghy
Solar arch, panels, batteries
Biggest TV that fits
Clothes washing machine
Hard bimini for helm (thoughts?)
New cushions interior and exterior
Guest mattress

Also in my list:

Reliable IT infrastructure (cellular internet/ship wifi/officing capabilities), we're going to try to continue working for a while
Electronics upgrades that get the ship's nav information into our iGadgets
Sheets, lines, halyards that aren't all the same color
Sailing dinghy for the fun times

Plans are liveaboard cruising starting on east coast US then carib islands. If all goes well, then we hope to go through the canal and do the west coast US/Hawaii.

Solar/new battery bank seems to be the big winner for the husband. He is none to impressed with the current wind generator.
Check with eMarine in FLL. They sold me a new gen 315 watt solar panel that carries me whole boat (36 HR). Panel wiring controller managed from your phone. 2-230 amp 8 D AGM batts. I use about 45-50 amps overnight/morning/eveningand are always back at full charge (460 amps) by the afternoon.

Good luck

Re: Top 3 Must Have Upgrades?

These are things we had, then broke and really realized how important they were.

Bimini - in central florida we spent one day on the water while the bimini was being replaced. That will never happen again. We are likely to put a permanent top on at some point as we will never sail with it down. I know it drives boat designers crazy to put a tent on the sleek lines. But the designers don't have to battle the sun.

Auto Pilot- We live on the inter-coastal and even with the tight confines of the ditch we use it a lot. the old wheel Pilot went out and we thought it was over rated. PFFF. not only did we replace it but we did it with a below deck sized for the boat and would never cast off again without one. off shore it is heaven to long on the bow while the auto pilot steers.

Bullet Proof Electrical system- We battled with electrical issues since we bought the boat three years ago. Just recently I brought a real electrician to sort things out and everything works better. From the alternator charging stuff to the Fridge staying cold. Never let the Chardonnay get warm! Crazy what low voltage does to everything. So keep/upgrade to a solid electrical system from the battery banks, to LED lighting is my third most important item.

I will add a fourth cause you cant go to the islands without it. A reliable dingy and motor. Crazy how little we use it on the intercostal, but how we cant live without it in the Bahamas. No matter what size.. RELIABLE is the key. In addition a system to deploy both the dingy and the engine. I have been almost injured and almost dropped my old 5 hp over board to many times, and many more in my nightmares. A engine lifting system and dingy lifting ( we just store the dingy on the bow using a Halyard). Found a really good engine davit for the new 9.9 engine and slap myself for not having it before.

No one is saying anything about safety so:

Life raft
EPIRB
Harness with crotch straps, tethers and MOB locators

If you are actually going to cruise rather than stay on the intracoastal:

Spinnaker and a good pole,
Wind Vane
Simple easy to maintain head with new hoses.

Re: Top 3 Must Have Upgrades?

Again, thank you to everyone for the advice. This is the information I was absolutely hoping to get.

Less of a specific review of what you think my exact boat needs...and more of a 1) "what we spent money on immediately that we didn't really need" or 2) "we waited 2 years to upgrade _____, and I wish we would have done it right away."

This is coming from the perspective of 3 homes bought/sold over the years.

Top 3 Must Have Upgrades?

We added tools for remote repairs, spares for everything, spares for the spares. We could have been more realistic about how remote we would be and not carried so much or spent so much on spare spares.

Also, not being an IT guy I’ve been happy to keep my ancient electronics that still work and not replace them because there is somethings newer and better.

Re: Top 3 Must Have Upgrades?

Really, most of this stuff, is stuff we somehow survived without thirty five years ago.

But, I like my toys and gadgets, too!

Water maker. Women need a lot more water than old male alligators. Good Bimini so my wife doesn't soon look like an alligator. Good autohelm because steering sucks.

Didn't see this mentioned, but maybe my old eyes missed it.
I wouldn't want to be without radar and AIS.
