I would suggest reaching out in San Fracisco or Santa Cruz Craig's List for tie dye specialists. I like the idea.

Re: Tie-Dye sunbrella

Hello, SailingSeaAlice,

I don't know if anyone has. It is acrylic fabric, but woven from very short strands, and very sensitive to chafe. It is quite expensive, so one would be hesitant about trying it one's self.

If you do get in correspondence with a dyer with a good reputation, I'd be quite interested to hear what you learn. The acrylics take color, quite well, in general. I used to make print dresses from it, and never had a fading problem, for instance. But I have no idea about adding dye. What sort of impression were you going for?

Ann
