Thumbs up Thought of the day - loving it!

A man who lives on the street envies a man who lives in a car.

A man who lives in a car envies a man who lives in a trailer.

A man who lives in a trailer envies a man who lives in a house.

A man who lives in a house envies a man who lives in a mansion.

A man who lives in a mansion envies a man who lives on a boat.

But a man who lives on a boat envies no one!

Re: Thought of the day - loving it!

I have never dragged anchor in my house when the wind is blowing fifty knots. That's about the only time I want to be in my house.

True - no anchor drag in a house - but 50kn (90km/h) of wind gusts on land would most likely blow off your roof and blow big tree branches right in your window.
The Australian definition of a severe thunderstorm specifies wind gusts of 90 km/h or more. [...] Wind gusts of around 90-100 km/h are strong enough to break large branches off trees, blow over some signs and remove roofing tiles [...] excess of 100-120 km/h may result in widespread damage with trees uprooted, larger-scale structural damage to buildings, light planes and caravans overturned and moving vehicles pushed off roads.

Even my shoal draft Morgan OI ketch performs better to windward than a house!

A man who envies anyone else is obviously not a sailor.

Re: Thought of the day - loving it!

Houses, are but badly built boats so firmly aground that you cannot think of moving them. They are definitely inferior things, belonging to the vegetable not the animal world, rooted and stationary, incapable of gay transition. I admit, doubtfully, as exceptions, snail-shells and caravans. The desire to build a house is the tired wish of a man content thenceforward with a single anchorage. The desire to build a boat is the desire of youth, unwilling yet to accept the idea of a final resting-place.

Well now, In Nova Scotia, when the wind is getting to over 100 km, it's not unusual to hear "...might be a bit breezy today..." but then we are a little crazy here. It has to be at least 120 plus to stop us getting storm chips and going to the liquor store. If the snow is not sideways it's really not a storm.
