That friggin mooring ball thing

When you are asleep in the v berth and the boat smashes into the mooring ball when wind opposes current. How do you remedy this? You will notice I am writing this very early in the morning.

I just winch the line tight so the mooring ball is out of the water or at least on a very short taut line.

Not a problem if you're tied between fore and aft moorings as long as your lines are properly lengthed.

... or when there is zero wind but just enough water movement to bang the hull against that ball during the nite? And you don't have to be sleeping in the berth for it to ruin the nite. If you find an answer, I'd like to hear it too.

Throw out a stern anchor

Had this exact problem in Martinique. Very annoying. I like the idea to tie to another mooring at the back or drop a stern anchor.

Just pull the bridle lines from each bow tight and the mooring stays trapped in the middle between the bows.

Turn and lock the rudder hard (or nearly so) over, so that the bow is forced (by the passing current) away from the ball.
You have to adjust the relative lengths of the two bridle lines, if used.
Doesn't always work, though.

Exactly, never a problem on a cat!

I have a 'mooring ball bridle' permanently fixed that won't let the ball touch the hull!

That could be very bad advice. In many of the mooring fields we've been in where this is a problem having a stern anchor out would be way worse. You would either be hit by another boat that is free to spin with the current change or you could wrap that anchor line around your boat. Or you could end up board side to the current.

A stern anchor in a tight mooring field or anchorage with a decent current is a very bad idea.

Drop an inner tube or a pool floatie shaped like an inner tube over the ball

I never tried this but maybe extend the painter and then pull it towards the stern with a snatch block?

That's a good idea! Reading the comments I'm thinking many of them won't work on the balls we've tied up to, but this would work on any ball as long as you have a big enough tube.

Ive never actually slept on my boat on the mooring and i have a cat anyway but how about something like a pool noodle over the pennant to make it semi rigid. Ive seen this used on the dinghy painter to stop it over running the mothership.
