Teak Problem

Something ugly is growing in the teak, apparently from too much oil. The problem is how to get down to a clean layer on upholstered teak furniture. I can't just take it outside, do the dirty and hose it down. Any ideas?

Re: Teak Problem

I'v used tilex on my boat for years. Just scrub the teak with a green scrubie , wipe clean with a cloth and let dry. It will strip off all the old oil and leave the teak ready to be finished. You might need to do several passes to get all the oil off. After it dries overnight I'd use a wipe on varnish available at lowes or home depot like Formby,s. It will seal the teak and you will never get mold growing on it as it dries hard as a rock.

Re: Teak Problem

Janet,

I had to hand sand our oiled teak to get rid of the mold that grew in the oil. The dust vacuums up, mostly, then a damp cloth will get the rest... I have never used "Tilex", can't comment on it. But dianacay's comment to varnish it afterwards seems right on to me, it is what I did, but using exterior varnish like we used on our exterior teak. I'd try her method. Of course, do something to protect the upholstery. FYI, clear varnish dries harder than matte, because the flattening agents affect the satin finishes.

Re: Teak Problem

vinegar . sea water, and do not over oil. black is not mold as much as dirt in the wood caused by incomplete cleaning. black is dirt caught in the wood under teak oil.
in my interior i use orange oil or lemon oil, as available. i prefer orange oil. i have never gotten blackness from orange oil inside boat, but i clean well with murphys oil soap or sea water, depending on what i am trying to accomplish.
exterior wood is sea water, then teak oil. done sporadically.

Re: Teak Problem

Zee,

What I had was greenish mold, like the green mold on bread sometimes. As it happens, I hate mold, and I made it go away forever.

Re: Teak Problem

Then my argument becomes that it cannot grow in such a perfectly gorgeous and clinically clean environment such as yourself then.

Re: Teak Problem

Boracol... The answer to mould, aged, stained teak decks is Boracol.... As recommended by Hallberg Rassy and widely used by professional superyacht crews. Look it up on Internet for a dealer near you. Follow the instructions and wait about two weaks for the product to work its magic. Very effective and guaranteed NOT to damage the caulking. Use the 0.5 conentration for all except the hrdest cases. A 5 ltr. container will treat about 20 sq mts of decking.
