Re: starlink for beginners

I am afraid it is not me who is confused and confusing powering the thing with it's networking architecture.
Nobody thinks that the power adapter with it's 5521 barrel plug has anything to do with networking here, I hope.

What is wrong with you? Here is the info straight from Starlink confirming the mini has the router integrated in the dish.

I have only seen Starlink satellites a few times and that was years ago. I look for them but have not seen them in years. When I did see them it was after sunset. I have only seen one or two and never a string of satellites that were just launched.

Yes, both the devices are in the same plastic enclosure in a Mini (Which I had in hands the whole afternoon) nobody has ever said anything else here. But of course you have as usually won, if it makes you happier.

Get a burner phone. Set up your Mini , get rid of the phone.

Re: starlink for beginners

WOW has this thread drifted.

Reading the Starlink install manual, it appears that the cell phone (once you have downloaded the app) provided you with a tool to confirm orientation of the mini antenna to the satellite's. The phone provides feedback. I am guessing you can do that without the tool by just moving and turning the antenna til you get data flowing.

The phone App is a tool to communicate with the antenna through to the satellites. TO do it on your PC you will need to connect to the antenna using the Ethernet cord. Your wifi should be turned on and connection needs to be made to the antenna. The phone makes is happen because of the APP programming.

I would contact their support center to understand how you can do it without a phone.

I read an article a while back from Starlink concerning the first 100 + satellites launched were bare metal surfaces and the Astronomers Community were complaining that the constellation aura was interfering with optical telescopes…Starlink responded by saying they were researching methods of surfacing/painting their satellites to defeat this reflective issue….

Re: starlink for beginners

I am sure you can take the whole dish and set it up at JB Hifi (or boat neighbour/friend/someone)- use one of their phones to align/activate. Then take it all back to the boat.

Mate didn`t even need to do any of that just powered it up (inside boat), connected to wifi SSID STARLINK and away you go. Can login to router and set a passphrase etc.

Some info here-

Is laughable all the privacy concerns when using Elon on board - which gathers your exact position and who knows what else to farm in his big data harvesting enterprise.

You will be surprised how little Elon gets to know if you do it right and there won't be nothing valuable to farm.

@tcpbob: you wanna use the mini's rj45 port and switch off the wlan. I use then the GInet Beryl travel routers via rj45 with custom firmware for the "dark mode", via France you can get unregistered debit card you can load with cash money and unregistered Sim too. Used with a hacked oppo cell phone and a wlan Xiaomi Pad purchased via a Chinese reseller. I think you know what to do with this hardware...
I mostly don't care but if I wanna go dark I can, the lovely authorities don't need to know everything...and Elon gets fed with fake data.

First, there is only one Starlink constellation. Second, what you see is a fresh batch of satellites that was launched very recently. Such a batch is launched in one rocket and they are placed in a cassette and ejected from it all at once. Afterwards they slowly navigate to their positions in the constellation and you won’t see them anymore.

I much rather have Starlink satellites than government spying and military weaponized satellites.

Re: starlink for beginners

OK… I got it up and running. I borrowed a phone, (bless her heart for lending it) and loaded up the app … took the square thingo and stuck it outside and then got through the setup…. Which was kind of a pain in the arse… and as soon as there were passwords for connection and account organised…. Connected! That was hours later...

For the most part I used my laptop for navigating through account details. Also from wording I encountered whilst in “account”, I think it could be done entirely with a computer but at the time I could not be bothered to gather and preserve what I found. I suspect that starlink came to prefer to force traffic into phones for their own purposes but left the capabilities to use only a computer in place…. Just a suspicion, not fact.

Leighpilot sad to say but burner phones around here are no longer that I could find, and for the part you use the phone for, would take a “smart phone”, couple hundred $AUD.

JSSailem orienting the square bit…. Silly. I just stuck it out there and cut to the next task. It is going on a boat! Not terra firma! And as Jedi pointed out unit provides wifi from the square bit so no ethernet required though it may be better for general signal security.

Mattzilla Elon is way down the list of security threats compared to Google, Facebook and the like. And you say “… to quote the first line of instructions on that page you provided a link to… Download the Starlink App and scan the QR code located on the kit packaging to step through the install process. Etc...your mate was…. Well… misunderstood me thinks.
