Just want to know for those of you who don’t put paper in the toilet, besides bagging is there a special can out there that controls odors? Kind of like a diaper genie for nurseries.....

First - buy the book "Get Rid of Boat Odors" by Peggy Hall. She is the undisputed queen of this subject and is a member of this forum.

As for toilet paper this is what we have come up with - it's not the definitive answer, just our answer.

In each head I installed one of those small metal containers you see in ladies rooms for the disposal of sanitary products - they're rectangular with a lid. Then I use either a lunch size paper bag or a biodegradable plastic bag to line that. It fills up pretty quickly so you'll be emptying it every other day or so -

In summer, when smells seem stronger, I spray a small sponge with either a water/eucalyptus or water/tea tree oil solution and put it in the bottom of the metal bin with the liner over that. It's not sopping wet, just damp with the scent. You could probably just put a few drops of the oil directly on the sponge.

We have been living on our sailboat for over 5 years and do not use a separate container. Our head is a electric quiet that has the macerator at the bowl We have had zero issues with it clogging up.

We used to bag it - and we did not have a good answer to this issue. Then we started using just normal Scott - single ply tissue. Now, with some prudent usage, our Groco (older bronze style) head handles it just fine.

Even if I were willing, my wife would not be. Find the right kind of paper. Use reasonable amounts. Flush well, with lots of water. Problem solved.

I really think that the majority of people who have clogging problems with toilet paper have them because they are afraid of filling up their holding tank, and so they try to conserve on the amount of water per flush. Use lots of water. Use more water than you need. Make sure you flush the paper all the way into the holding tank.

Of course, there are some people who seem to think that a roll of toilet paper should only last through three or four "movements." Those people are ALWAYS going to have problems!

Get a diaper genie, and keep it in the head for TP disposal. I have a strict no toilet paper in the head policy of my boat. Besides, the disgusting part is having toilet paper with feces on it in your hand, not where you dispose of said feces covered toilet paper. Even when I have guests on board and I explain to them that I prefer the toilet paper not to go in the head, they don't mind putting it in the Diaper Genie.

toss it daily and no odor. keep it overnight an d nastiness ensues. just keep good hygiene and cleaning practices. easy peasy.

If you throw it out of the window it gets in the sea.

We flush the toilet paper without issues but we always pump a little water in the bowl before doing our business to help things move along plus it helps keep the bowl a little cleaner as the standing water helps keep "things" from sticking .................

I have the cheapest head know (can buy a whole new one for less that $200) and we flush our tp down it. In 8 years of use, including 19 months full time live aboard, it has never clogged from the paper. It just recently clogged for the use time ever, but that was a loose scale problem.

I just don't understand this fear of putting tp down the head.

But just so I can stay on thread, get a small diaper pail.
