Re: Smallest long term live aboard.

All depends upon the Owners requirements for comfort, physical needs, cruising area, access to provisions and supplies, etc.

We know a 78 yo gentleman who lives aboard a 20’ Flica. In NC, has a car, rents a workshop, moves occasionally to a new town or marina.

We two have lived 6 months on a 33’er. We cruised from Delaware to Lake Ontario to Newfoundland. She is a true open water boat, and has lots of fuel and water tankage, and spares capacity. But she is 16,000 pounds and has a ton of storage. The Flica would not have worked for us.

Our primary hime now is a 44’ steel cutter, 40,000 pounds. We carry nearly 200 gallons of water and fuel. We have lots of spare and put provision storage. We can travel long distances and be self sufficient for months.

All depends on your personal needs.

Maggie & I [and all my tools] happily lived aboard & cruised a C&C29-2 [28'-6"LOA], for a decade.

Re: Smallest long term live aboard.

I've been aboard a 32c since 06.
Before a 24.
Now the" crew" consists of only myself , the 32cc is huge and I've endless storage and tankage compared to 2 women and 4 dogs and a daily requirement of two shore trips to accommodate the dogs.
And not having to waste money on frivolous landlubbers entertainment.

Re: Smallest long term live aboard.

My wife and I lived aboard a 1972 Catalina 27 for almost 3 years. Granted we were young, she doesn't really want to do that again. But we now have our 1982 Endeavour 32 that we plan to some some cruising on. She says she'll go to the Bahamas at least, I hope to take it further.

Re: Smallest long term live aboard.

In the 5.5 years I have been wandering around the smallest boat I have seen with people living on is 26' and they are a mid 20s couple. I am good friends with them and I can also say that they started with the "low cost" thinking and have gotten mostly over that and gotten OK with the real world of it.
