The SHTF scenario has almost happened here in Greece and some people are already making huge changes to their lifestyle. Unemployment is now over 25% and for the under 30's its over 50%.

There was a couple living in a tent and a straw shelter on a beachfront plot in the last bay we anchored in. The bloke (architect) had lost his job last year. In May they moved to this fairly barren island and established a huge vegetable garden that they live off, supplementing this with fresh octopus. I was treated to a sight every day as the lean muscular bloke bent over naked and bashed the octopus to tenderise it . They had a small black plastic water tank. No power. Tent and straw shack with a permanent umbrella on the beach. Only one bucket I think. Really back to basics, but with little to complicate their lives they spent a huge chunk of it tending to the garden, swimming and lying naked under the beach brolly and reading. They were fit and happy and said life was much better than it had ever been on the mainland. Winter may have them thinking differently!

Really sad what the Eurozone has done to the Greek people and my heart goes out to those folks.

My main concern is that not enough thought (and action) will be put into how things proceed in the future - whilst I am a confirmed capitalist, I don't like bowing down to anything....and that includes "the market".....IMO time for the tail to stop wagging the dog .[/QUOTE]

A lot of the allure to sailing is being relatively independent and far from the maddening crowd.

While we can never be truly self sufficient we can be far more so than most. I find joy in that.

It is a side benefit that it also prepares you to better survive some calamities that afflict the herd.

Leaving aside Eurozone nonsense and misinformed Greece theories. Both will survive and prosper in time.

A small boat in my mind is the last place to be in a theoretical SHTF. ( mind you I find the whole pepper ideology absurd and comical )

Firstly on a boat you are only " independent" for a very short time, you need food, technical resources, equipment replacement, all that needs a functioning society. Equally you need a place where you are " welcome" appearing from the sea as a stranger is not a good gig.

Secondly hoarding things that other people need , only works when the law is upheld. Ultimately the greater force of numbers will take 'it' from you . ( whatever 'it' is). This is the experience of history. The "it" can be your food, that grain your hoarding or the boat itself.

It is a slow day in a little Greek Village.

The rain is beating down and the streets are deserted. Times are tough. Everybody is in debt. Everybody lives on credit.

The publican slips the money along to the local prostitute drinking at the bar, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer him "services" on credit.

The hooker then rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill to the hotel owner with the €100 note.

The hotel proprietor then places the €100 note back on the counter so the rich traveller will not suspect anything.
At that moment the traveller comes down the stairs, picks up the €100 note, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, pockets the money, and leaves town.


No one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole village is now out of debt and looking to the future with a lot more optimism. And that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is how the bailout package works!
