Mme Pilou, it sounds like you must be expert in this arena with that name.

Funny enough, I am doing battle right now with bed sheets trying to revive the guest bed sheet and remove years of brown staining. What a palaver. It is caused seemingly by sunscreen as you say, but also anti-perspirant and sweat and body oils. I am on my 5th washing machine cycle at 90 C. Each time with a different remedy. Pre-soaking in 90% neat liquid biological detergent, then a pre soak with Vanish, then vinegar, then baking soda paste, then a regular wash with a tiny bit of conditioner. It is now very much improved, but not like new. The first step made the biggest improvement.

With my own bed sheets there is much less staining. I don't use anti-perspirants. I keep cool at night, so don't sweat much and I shower in the evening, so am free of sun cream and clean to boot. I don't think I can influence my guests with a standing order on this.
I think at that stage I would just buy new ones. Though I know it is in cruisers' mindset not to throw anything out

If you can avoid sunscreen then the rest isn't too bad to deal with. Unfortunately it is a necessity in the Med in summer. Obviously I'm clean for bed, but I like to take a little siesta too. I also prefer lying down and chilling as opposed to sitting down and chilling.

On a boat, especially one that has storage under the berths, you cannot always enter the berth perfectly clean. Even more true when you need to fix something quickly.

I'll see what Ikea has to offer when I get to Palma.

Before I got married, my sheets had superheroes on them. Now I sleep on high quality, solid color sheets, like a proper adult. Usually darker colors.

White 100% cotton anything above 600 count from a retailer I know (LL Bean, Vermont Country Store in US). Online vendors (Overstock and.most of Amazon)have poor quality IMO.Click image for larger version

Re: Show me your bed sheets

100% percent cotton and high thread count, going 1000, 1200 or higher doesn't unfortunately guarantee quality, usually I have found that the very high thread count sheets to be thick and heavy, so best to be able to feel before you buy, although I have bought online and done OK.

Wash before you go to bed, this helps several ways, first a cool shower cools you off for bed, and your clean and not sweating making your washing not required as often.

I think comfort in bed is very important, I just spent $4K on a mattress and I'm not putting cheap sheets on it. Ditto on real plates, glasses and silverware. Maybe not real silverware and the good china and crystal, but not plastic either.

We have a washing machine for the boat, it's going in the unused head, to some extent it's to save on funds but the Wife has allergies to many types and brands of detergent so they only way to guarantee is to do your own washing.

My sheets were always a big hit with the women folk! Might have made them feel young and immature again. They might have liked the fact that I don't take myself too seriously. Who knows? The sheets always a got a reaction.

I never was a big superhero geek, never read a comic book in my life, I just thought it was funny.

I hope not!

Nah, the sheet was just ready to die, I'm afraid.

I think sheets with some polyester in them last better than 100% cotton, and that the sheets I used to source at Sears (cotton & polyester muslin) routinely lasted about 25 years, and I am not attuned to sheets dying in 4-5 yrs.

Also, if you live on a wet boat, your sheets are more likely to get stained than if you have dusty bilges. Not just sheets, either, blankets or duvets, as well.

I like light colored sheets, but they're a real pain to keep nice, especially when you don't have your own washing set up. I think frequent washing helps with sparkly, but also ages the fabric. Anyhow, a whole lot depends on where you are, and if you're washing them in a stream or on the boat or in a washing machine or by hand.

Re: Show me your bed sheets

I buy whatever is cheapest, since I know they will get ruined in due time, though I'm still using a three year old set of blue Walmart sheets and have not destroyed them yet. I view the sheets merely as a way to preserve the berth cushion covers. I also keep handy a poncho liner I had in the Army for warm nights, and a 40 year old quilt I bought in college for cool nights. I'm not fancy, and neither is my wife, thank god.

Re: Show me your bed sheets

Cotton satin, percalle, of the best quality I can afford.

At times, linen!

Solid colors, Malva, burgundy, red wine, lavender, peach, orange, usually in contrast with pillow covers.

Bed must be inviting and shiny

Same with towels, linens and the best cotton from Austria/Switzerland, tha t thick and fluffy

Ah, poncho liners, about the warmest thing there is that weighs nothing.
In Germany we had them sewn into our wet weather gear, warm and dry, a nice combination.

Re: Show me your bed sheets

Two things:

What is a poncho liner?? (I'm looking it up but still asking for conversion purposes)

And does anyone use bamboo?

I thought cotton was a hot temp fabric. We bought some eucalyptus based sheets, tencel lyocell, recently from bed bath and beyond for its coolness and moisture control.

Well see how they go here in southeast Louisiana. They are light green with fine contrasting stripes.
