Since there’s a military base or three in your area, this may be an option. And as a thought, there will likely be some newly commissioned officers, & enlisted folks arriving there after the holidays. Since there are a decent number of graduations, & commissions that happen around the New Year. Though plenty of folks arrive on base all months of the year, due to various schools being completed at different times.

Common sense, & the benefit of age’s hindsight, would say that an “easy” way to sell much of your stuff would be to make the furniture, dishes, cutlery, linens, etc. into a package deal for someone.

My husband is an officer as well, and works at the base closest to us. I could have him advertise somethings there.. so, great idea! I also like the idea of selling as package deals. Would be great for kitchenware...

We already have an exit strategy, which is a blessing!!

Re: Selling Stuff And Downsizing

custom, high end furniture would get better prices from a dealer/consignment/Craigslist/estate sale. All "average" furnishings are better off donated or given away IMO.

I'm in the same process. It can be daunting. Even though I've made progress in the past year you'd never believe so if you entered my house! Every room seems a mess! I'm nearing the end of major repairs and in the down hill stretch. It's over whelming right now but I've got a second wind because of the state of disarray, if that makes sense.

I'm focused now on getting rid of stuff and working on aesthetics. Lucky that I'm good at painting and also like to paint!

it does get easier letting go. And it's such a wonderful feeling giving something away to a person that really appreciates that object. I just keep looking around and say to myself "OMG! There's so much crap!"

Now I'm at a point where I am focused on 1 room at a time. That helps tremendously! That would be my suggestion. Break it down to 1 room at a time.

Holy crap!! I had no idea you could do that! That would be a very easy thing to try in the beginning. Did you get a good fair price? and did it sell fast?

Trelora ists your house with MLS and promotes your listing. The sales person is any realtor who accepts the commission you offer. In our case we have the commission as a flat fee but that amount is about 1% of listing price. Only one realtor argued about it. But we never spoke with the realtor, Trelora spoke with him for us. Trelora only makes a few hundred for the listing.

Re: Selling Stuff And Downsizing

Hi Scarlett,
The biggest concern about selling anything is knowing the market. In this day and age, with the internet, this is a very easy hill to climb. Your house probably being the most important item, search the net for real estate for sale listings and transactions. Most area newspapers even publish these. The transactions are good because they show what the home sold for. As with anything your selling, if your offering a good product at a reasonable price, you shouldn't have any problems.

Happy Voyaging, Rhett
( Sorry, I just couldn't resist that one)

Re: Selling Stuff And Downsizing

My better half happened upon an article about decluttering, which referred to an ancient Asian principle:
Once a year, hold everything you own in your hand.
If it doesn't bring you joy, throw it away.

So far she's thrown away:
The electric bill
The scale
Most of the vegetables
Her bra
The mirror
The treadmill
An empty bottle of wine
And she's looking at me funny.

Just a small note, if your plans are to move aboard while selling your home, insurance companies are not friendly when ask to insure a vacant home. FYI

The best idea may be to simply place your things in an inexpensive storage facility for at least the first 6 months to a year of cruising to see if the lifestyle is for you.

This is especially true for those not living on the coast

That's funny! I did the same thing. I had no idea I was following an "ancient Asian principle". I feel rather superior now!

Where I live, there is a Facebook group. There are perspective buyers who list in the group what they are looking for; perspective sellers list there house with pictures.

I'm not a big Facebook fan, but my FSBO will go on there.
