No problems and I am glad you took it somewhat comically. I also totally respect that it is no laughing matter you are over there defending your country.

Still, I was very serious about the defence of property part. I know people who have as I said “gotten into deep water” doing the same while the alleged offender got a slap on the wrist.

On the other hand, I would really not like to see how I would react if I found someone breaking into my boat. We might just have to leave it till then while I pick up a few more of those submission holds?

They won't let us have guns for the same purpose over here in Australia. The one lady I know who tried ended up in the situation above. Anyway you have laugh at the though of this defenceless old lady pulling a shotgun on some thugs trying to pinch a car from her motel’s parking lot; totally priceless? (Well not really as she got fined heavily, ended up on a bond and lost her guns and licence not to mention the legal fees for the unsuccessful defence).

Lets face it guys.... try all you want.. if they WANT to get in they will....
A boats not like a house and lets face it in these days of everything having alarms that go off all over the place... who actually listens anymore... is it not more a case of... "F#*king car alarms"
In the UK a few years back when they brought out a so called 'Thief Proof Outboard Lock'... they thieves then invested in a chainsaw and then simply cut the engines and brackets out of the transom.... a lot of smaller sailboats were nearly destroyed
Me.. I just use the bog standard locks that come with the boat... never been broken into or robbed... either side of the Atlantic or Med.
Another thing to watch out for for those in the Med... there are some folks out of Marseilles who go out every year with a 'Shopping List' of items from dinghies to pedigree dogs.. usually in the Balearic's area but they may have moved on.
They are very slick and can take your dinghy that's tied up astern on the move... believe me

Which brings up an incident in Margaritta several years ago - a visiting cruiser dinghied ashore to check-in. No problems securing the dinghy at the marina but as they were returning in their dinghy back to their boat they noticed a local in a boat that seemed to be following them. Probably coincidental they thought. They went below to put away the paperwork and came backup a few minutes later to see their dinghy and motor being towed away by the locals. Now that's brazen.

Yes? And what would they do to a retreating target? Flare gun might light his way... and the sniper rifle? You're going to waste your whole life by shooting a petty thief?

In any country in the world you will be locked up and the key tossed to a oversized smelly guard that loves sex crazed antics with prisoners squirming.

For a dinghy?

Better buy some rubbers....

Yea.. the enemy here does not have all the regulations WE AMERICAN's have. They also do not have lawyers walking the battlefield to make sure THEY did everything by the book before pulling the trigger.

Sorry your confused, maybe your misreading my intent. Maybe your misinterpreting the difference between war or theft of your property. I apologize to all if this thread has drifted, also if my views have upset anyone.

I will not skew this thread any further or into a left-wing-tea party-right wing discussion. Security for your boat while away ... gotcha

Negative, Sir!

My way is NOT to go to the places where thieves abound. I went to Panama only because there is a Canal there I had to use. I went to Brazil only because I was young and stupid.

There are dozens if not hundreds of destinations where theft is next to non-existent. Why then go to the troubled spots?

Only reasons I can think of, and I do not have a boat yet:
  1. To arrive at their end destination, passage through a suspected area might be
  2. They did not know ot was a bad area

Dunno. Its got me stuffed.

I think a number of people in our socio-economic group (cruisers et al) don't really think there are people who can hate us just for being us.

Some perople who are poor, badly educated and badly brought up hate us because of jelousy and perceived justification that we are richer so moraly worthy of being targets.
Others hate us because they are influenced to hate us by regimes scared of losing power.
Iran is about to stone a female to death because she had sex.
a 13 year old rape victim was stoned to death in another coutry because of the sex she had whilst being raped.

There's plenty of people out there who have many reasons to hate us or to target us.

I think its lunacy to respond to it in armycheif 'lets kill them all' manner. I think its easier for us to just avoid the areas and come back in a few years when things have changed.
One difficulty that brings is that without tourism the countries involved suffer even more.

By going where we can do safely and supporting local businesses (not giving away freebies) and local communities then hopefully people will find there is nothing to fear from us and some honest money to be made in exchange for hard work.

It does astound me how bad some people can be... that jet ski shooting in Mexico where the killers also killed the investigating police officer. If thats true thats one bad mob!

Mark,

That is NOT what I said..and I do not like the intent sir. I mearly stated that
once a individual makes the decision to steal from me or harm my family, there should be no expectations of leniency. Nothing more..nothing less.
