Re: Security. What do You Do? Hole in Dingy Floor

YEs, agreed, but it makes it less desireable for the theif. Painting it 'loud - BRight' colors are also an option, but it tell everyone where you are and that you are not on your boat also.

I stay close to BIG EXPENSIVE Yachts...

You don't have to be able to swim faster than the sharks, just your swim partner!!

A dive knife is not to cut a shark, but to cut your dive buddy

Re: Security. What do You Do?

i'm thinking some kind of siren on the outboard. pull the starter cord without disabling it and it screams.

Re: Security. What do You Do?

I don't think an open deck plate in the bottom of an inflatable dink would make it sink. Maybe get some water in it, but I see the point; why steal a dink with a hole it it.
Thanks
Ed

Re: Security. What do You Do?

good one, doj--those are so loud dont need a loud alarm, but they dont get stolen either--here in la cruz only one dink was stolen in this entire year--that is a good average. that dink was left in water overnight and taken easily when the lady was sleeping. dinks need to be locked n lifted.
in the marina, is safe-i dont even have to lock up when i go to town.
my security measures vary, depending on my location.

Re: Security. What do You Do?

I once sent a few young men to jail when I notified the police after I witnessed them vandalizing a vending machine. Several weeks later, they returned to my house and walked back and forth for an hour. My neighbor overheard them talking about how they planned to kill me and came over to warn me. I grabbed my camera, leaned out the window and just kept snapping pictures of them with the flash on. They disappeared and never returned. Having proof of someone's wrongdoings is a powerful deterrent. I think a camera with a flash connected to a motion detector (like the cameras they place in the forests and jungles to photograph wildlife) would be reasonably effective. Just a thought. And if it works like it should, you'll have a picture of the offender. I didn't have any film in my camera, but it didn't matter. THEY didn't know there was no film in the camera!

Interesting design for a mooring buoy that folks won't want to steal, or tie off to...just make sure when you tie off to it that it actually is yours. Though the downside may be that you get lots of navy types wanting to use it.....

Come to Jersey. I haven't locked my dink for 5 years. But I did lose a rowlock a few months back , it either got trapped under a mooring line and pinged off - or got stolen by a Somali Pirate .

Re: Security. What do You Do?

Frankly if I'm boarded and robbed, I'd happy hand over everything and walk away as long as no one got hurt -- including the entire boat. I would certainly not want to harm even a thief and have that on my karma the rest of my life. Human life -- even a thief's -- a worth more than any material possessions.

The only real concern I have is about leaving the dink at a pier when provisioning, and locking up the boat when I'm not aboard.

Oh, and zombies.

Re: Security. What do You Do?

The key thing is boarded. If that bit fails, the rest is a washout.

Mine is a hard dingy, and has the inflatable tubes I modified for it. Putting in a dagger board trrunk soon asn will put in a large deckplate there. that fancy siren that goes off if you disconnect/cut the wire/cable is on my shopping list. Will put it on the dingy and the outboard.

My concept is: IF you get to the objective, it is manned by a platoon of infantry, with a mine field and razor wire fencing, you probably don't wnat to try to bust in to use the head...
