Re: Receiving Social Security crusing

I have had my SS diret deposited for over two years now....never a hitch.
Plastic for most expeditures, ATM, etc. Pay plastic bill on line dirctly from my bank account. Very easy. All you have to do is set it up.

Re: Receiving Social Security crusing

They mail checks in very rare instances.

I suppose they will always mail checks in very rare instances.

But generally, almost everyone has their checks electronically deposited and in the near future, either they will electronically deposit into your bank, or they'll issue their own ATM-type cards for everyone else.

It's the way it is.

But it really makes it easier on a person who doesn't have a static address for everything . . . such as a RV nomads or boating /cruising liveaboards.

Re: Receiving Social Security crusing

No, No NO.... You simply have it sent to me and also send me your Drivers License and a copy of your SS Card.

I'll take care of cashing it and all that stuff. I'll have to charge a minimal service fee, after all I do need a new Dink and motor. Should be able to forward your money after about 5 to 7 months. That will cover the fees for the first year which are always deducted first.

This is a service I'll only do for a few chosen people. I may need to have you provide a competency statement along with the Drives License and SS Card.

Re: Receiving Social Security crusing

Since May 1, 2011 the US government has required Social Security recipients to either use Direct Deposit or a special debit card issued by them (I had never heard of this option). I suggest you use Direct Deposit. Have used Direct Deposit for the last 10 years for my VA check and it works great. I think the special debit card is primarily for people who don't have bank accounts (perhaps if homeless). A good place to start is here: Direct Deposit

Reality Check, Gee I'm sorry, but the government beat you to it. Well most of it anyway. What I was after is how to get money where there is no atm. Like out in the islands somewhere off the grid

There are surprisingly few places anymore without an ATM. Those that have no ATM usually have no place to take your money anyway.
Problem solved.

What do we do in a few more years, when/if(?) banks begin charging hefty fees for the debit/credit cards?

Yes, it's amazing that almost everywhere in the world with electricity has ATMs and the Internet these days. Be sure to have at least two different ATM cards on two different bank accounts--sometimes one service works and sometimes another does. Try not to keep too much in the accounts that could possibly be stolen if one of your ATM cards is compromised. However, it is still worthwhile to have a secret stash someplace of $$ just in case.

There are plenty of nice places without an ATM handy. Another option is Western Union. One can use the online feature to send money from your bank to yourself. There are some reasonably priced options.
