Quitting the Job

I gave my employer (a very large NSW Government department) six months notice that I would be taking leave and not coming back at the end of it. As I was the only person with the skills and knowledge to do the job I did (a specialised IT position), I thought they needed that much notice to arrange for someone to be hired and seconded over and for me to train them. In the end, they got someone two weeks before I finished and I ended up passing on virtually nothing. So much for trying to help the place I worked for for 37 years!

I know, right? People who aren't IT have no idea what it means to pass IT knowledge over, for the most part. For me, it has been an endless string of 1-3 year engagements. It's driving me crazy. Over and over again, not really building on a nest egg. Not being able to take advantage of certain training, or learning skills that end up evaporating because of the next job. I am so tired.

A couple of those are on me though... sometimes I wish I'd did things differently. But then again, I probably wouldn't be chatting with y'all about sailing and chasing dreams.

An update, I gave notice. I told him I would work at least until May, he thinks I will stay longer, but I told him I would stay at least until May.
What triggered it was him talking longer range plans with me. I said Boss I told you that I would be Retirind soon, remember?
That is four months notice

That's lots of notice, your probably happy this part of your adventure is now behind you.

Heh, that's the same as my current project. I keep saying I'm leaving in the summer to go sailing, and they keep asking if I'd like to stick around longer. I think non-sailors can't comprehend that we are really serious about this stuff! I'm sure it seems to them like it must be a lark.

What is the best least hassle way to sell a vehicle? I really don't want to advertise and talk to everyone after letting them drive it, although my bike sold easily that way.
But surely there are places that will buy vehicles, lose a little money of course, but no hassle?

You got me there, I usually use Craigslist and Kiji...I don't do test drives unless we have cut a deal and I have a deposit. If he doesn't like something on the test drive then I'll return his deposit. On bikes, you come, you look and you buy, no test ride, ever.

I just found this thread and read the whole thing. It kind of spoke to me. I think the American workplace has changed dramatically- for good (as in forever, not necessarily for the better.) Our generation has a hard time adjusting our heads to it.

I'm amazed you gave four months' notice and are still there. Will be more amazed if you actually get the four months.

I was sailing last month with my 24-year-old daughter. She was taking five days of her vacation to spend with me. The second day, she got an email, made a quick phone call, and announced to me she had just been laid off. They asked her to mail her laptop in to them as soon as she got home from vacation. This was a mass layoff, not a firing.

She cried a bit and got over it later that day. I fumed for months!

Oh well, good luck with the next four months, and good luck sailing. My suggestion- sell your car (and any other non-essentials) on Craigslist. Craigslist is the retiree's friend. Haggle, sell high, and buy ultra-cheap! You'll be amazed how much farther you can stretch a dollar.

Depending on the car you have, I would definitely go with Craigslist. I had a Toyota Corolla that I wanted to sell, and took it CarMax thinking it would offer the least hassle for a small haircut in the price. The guy offered me 50% of Blue Book value.

I smothered my laughter, walked out, and put an ad on Craigslist. Within an hour my phone was ringing and the car was sold in less than 24 hours for full Blue Book value.

A64, you've done the best for them that you could. If you actually attain freedom sooner, it will give you time to finish up with the improvements you were making to your boat.

Judging by the post above this one, by Cthoops, craigslist will be the better way to sell your car.

I retired about a year ago and we moved aboard in August. Vehicle wise, we were in a little different situation than you. Our truck was supposed to go until this spring (F250 w/ 7.3L diesel) and then we'd sell it, but developed a cracked head 2 months ago; and we had no desire to incur the repair bill. We sold it through Peddle (https://www.peddle.com/ since it had to be towed away, but they also deal in running used vehicles. Smooth operation; 3 weeks from start to finish. You can look them up and see if it will work for you. All transactions for listing and marketing are online; no actual document / money change until the buyer comes to you.

So why give notice? What is minimum acceptable?
I am an officer in the Corporation if that helps, although a much more minor officer than I was just a few years ago, yet still carry the title.

The best advice I can give..
.. is to do what feels right to YOU in your relationship with your employer.

If it has been a relationship of mutual trust and respect, then don't jeopardize that relationship.

Quite often, retired trusted staff are offered short time special projects that can be fun or interesting.....
I have had that "retired" relationship for 15 years now when I was able to retire at 50 .

I tried the peddle out of curiosity, Bluebook is 8,500, they wanted to list at 5,100.
I think their niche is damaged, non drivable vehicles.
I guess I'll go Craigs list, for the most part it has been good to me so far

Congrats on the big move A64. Sounds like you’re being very clear and generous with your employer. I bet you won’t be looking back.

We said goodbye to house and jobs going on two years ago. But we’re still struggling with what to do with our three vehicles; one small car and two small motorcycles. The car remains useful as we hop our way out the Great Lakes and (hopefully) to Newfoundland this season. I tried to sell the bikes privately rather half-heartedly, but quite frankly they’re worth more to us than we can sell them for.

I gave 4 months notice. We seemed to not get our act together to sell the house, belongings and car. But in the end it all worked out and we sold the car the same day as we got the check for the house,................ and left the next day!
