Outta the boat

After retiring from West Africa early 2012, I bought a big tent and pitched it all over the SW U.S. trout fishing many famous and not so famous rivers. I then gave away most of my worldly possessions and moved onboard my dream boat with a large back pack and a couple on small bags.

So far I have spent 10 hours today packing stuff and putting under or next to a 10 x 10 canopy on my slip. I am about 3/4 through emptying the boat. I am amazed at the gear that has accumulated.

I have been battling a flea infestation and plan to empty every cranny, cover the corners with borax and set off the bug bombs. I want the boat empty before I start.

Anyone needing a left handed thing-a-ma-bob extractor I likely have 3 on the dock. For sale cheap.

Capt. Eric,

I hope both your flea extermination program and your dock sale are successful.

Cat (or much less common dog)Fleas will not survive to reproduce without a susceptible host. Do you have spent on board? Treat the pet monthly ( or every 3 aka if you like) using a veterinary prescribed flea product and you will stop finding afield fleas within a very short time. Continue regular treatments and eventually you'll exhaust any larval or pupal stages that may be in your boat environment. It really does work this way

Good luck
Nick

Re: Outta the boat

The cats been vacationing almost 3 weeks at my sons place. She was getting paranoid from the bites and the flea baths. The fleas pretty much skip around my lady and are drawn to me like bees to honey.

I figure it must be a body chemistry and temp thing.

I catch at least a half dozen a night with the soap dish under the salon table. We keep a little soapy water in a shop vac and use it regularly. I put rugs down for warmth in the winter but they got bagged early.

Halloween, the cat, has ended up with behavior issues over this. A few months ago she started trying to avoid walking on the floor. She started walking the galley cabinet to the settee to the top of the sewing machine and would stretch to reach her food and water. 15 years old, she knows the cabinets are off limits. My lady don't allow.

We noticed the fleas a couple of weeks later.

She then quit using the litter box in the forward head and started living in the cockpit. I made her a cat door as soon as she came on board so she could roam. Retired mountain cat.

I hope her time away gets her back on track.

Outta the boat

For those unaware of the soap dish trap, I put a dab of dawn dish washing liquid in a white Corel plate, set it under the salon table, pour warm water almost to the rim and shine my desk lamp into it. I empty it with my shop vac. No spills.

It seems to work better without other lights on. The soap affects the surface friction and the fleas sink right away. You don't want bubbles.

I set it up an hour ago and am looking at one drowned freshly hatched lil bast#rd.

The hunt continues.
