To OP - I'm sitting at the dock waiting to get hauled out. maybe I picked up mu dodger that I dropped off way back in Nov $695.50. I will admit that I went 2 years past when I planned to take the dodger in and just flipped the center up so I could see, so I guess I didn't HAVE to spend that money
Ugh. That’s a long wait. Does its arrival mean that once you are back in the water you’ll be moving on from Jacksonville?

We got out dodger back today. We also hauled out today for the first time in 34 months. We are are going to be in Jacksonville till March 6. We are still trying to go on vacation (I know to some that sounds weird).

Chuckr, wow!

how did you spend less than 600 a month (on average) for two, for 9 years?

i imagine that you:

-bought a boat in top (near top) condition
-when cruising: anchored out mostly: 25 out of 30 days a month or so?
-when not cruising: found a cheap spot (on the hard)?
-cooked on the boat
-traveled to less expensive countries
-fixed most everything yourselves (which skills were the most useful?)

did you actually spend about 72K on year 10?

please tell

Nice to see someone with an honest assessment of their expenses even if it’s painful. I want to try living the boating lifestyle. I just sold my house with a closing on May 1st.. I own my Flicka outright but worry it’s too small for a live aboard. I guess a year in the sun will be a telling experience. I can see how the money can run through your fingers.

Thanks. Congrats on the house sale! What a great boat you have! I could live on it by myself, but I tend to be a minimalist. Best of luck to you!

Thank you for continuing to post! Your expenses on boat gear drive the point of costs of a modest boat versus something larger. As we consider moving up from out Tartan 27-2, a big question for us is "How much bigger?". So thanks again for your info!

Hi Chuckr- I've read a lot of blogs, vlogs and post about expenses and am trying to get a realistic expectation. I don't want to run out of money. And of course I'm keeping an ongoing spreadsheet with how we live now and how we will on a boat-Going out to eat on occasion, drinking alcohol, day trips, dogs, sometimes having to stay in a marina, keeping a driver's license and a car on land.

And of course, I understand our lifestyle and expenses will/can be different than everyone else's. But I don't want to under estimate.

The following is my best estimate for monthly expenses:

cloth/shoes 20
life insurance 950
mobile phone 139.99
Netflix 12
auto insur 62.71
internet 50
xbox live 10
car registration 5
dog food 240
gas/diesel 617
groc/hygiene 745
car maintenance 4.58
dog health 105.75
customs 100
anchor/marinas 1013
hair/peds 18.33
day trips/alcohol 480
Iridium go 250
predictWind 33
apple iTunes 2.99
boat insur 300
dental 16.67
transportation 107
driver's lic 1.59
Total with dogs and land car- $5284.61, without dogs and land car-$4972.32 And I didn't include medicare premiums which add approximately $600.00 more to our budget and I could drop the life insurance which would be- $4622.32, without alcohol or day trips- $4142.32, reducing marina/mooring fees to $20 average per day- $3729.32, oh and then add 10% cost of boat maintenance everyone tells us- another $100-$600 per month- $3829.32 to $4329.32 per month.

I'm sure I'm missing items. Any help or suggestions would be very welcome.

You seem to be putting a lot of effort into your blog and educating the cruising community - have you considered generating revenue from your efforts?
Are you aware of patreon.com? Take a look at www.youtube.com: Lady K sailing.

In the interest of paying it forward, I thought I'd list our monthly expenses for those who are dreaming and planning as we once were.

As background, we are a middle-aged couple (I'm 49, Mr. cthoops is 59) and we are cruising full-time on our 1977 Bristol 29.9. This is our second boat and we've spent the last few years sailing her in the summer and refitting during the winter.

We really slowed down on the boat this month, spending the entire time in Florida.

The cash outflow was, frankly, painful. However, we knew that it was going to be a very high-cost month. After debating over the course of a few months, we made the decision to switch from our hank-on jib to a roller furler. One of the reasons we debated it for so long is because we were knew just how expensive it was going to be to make the switch. It represents just over 50% of what we spent this month. We also spent a lot of money preparing for the trip to the Bahamas by stocking up on groceries and extra boat maintenance parts. Finally, we rented a car and took a trip to the west coast of Florida to visit family and friends which was an atypical expense.

We are consoling ourselves with the knowledge that our time in the Bahamas should be extremely low cost, helping to bring the monthly average down to something that is actually sustainable.

Here's what we spent in January, keeping in mind that Mr. cthoops has congestive heart failure so we don't drink alcohol (his cardiologist says no) and we eat out infrequently (because of his sodium restrictions).

With a deep breath, here we go

Expenses:

Groceries/Non-food Groceries: $956.28

Diesel/Gasoline: $64.91

Propane/Denatured Alcohol: $44.00. *Two gallons of denatured alcohol for the stove.

Health Care: $176.55.*

Life Insurance premium: $220.75

Cell phone and internet (2 phones, one iPad data plan, iCloud storage, and a
Garmin inReach subscription): $142.66.

Mail: $19.57

Laundry: $8.00.

Ice: $8.50

Netflix: $11.10

Amazon Prime: $12.99

Miscellaneous annual subscriptions: $123.47

U.S. Coast Guard Documentation Renewal: $26.00

Boat stuff: $5,465.60.* The majority of this - $4,433.40 - was for the furler, its installation, converting the headsail, and related costs. We also bought an SSB receiver, spare engine parts (i.e. filters, belts, zincs), Fluid Film, Loctite, diagonal wire cutters, an oil filter wrench, Far Bahamas Explorer Chart, extra cotter pins, 2 Luci lights for anchorages, a propeller shaft zinc, reflective mast tape, a spotlight, a diesel fuel funnel filter, two squeeze bottles for diesel, an extra 5 gallon diesel jerry jug, and an extra 1 gallon gas jerry jug.

Restaurants/Entertainment: $90.03

Uber/Bus: $29.34

New York Times subscription: $20.20

Marinas/moorings: $312.98.* This is for 23 nights at Vero Beach City Marina.

Sarasota/Bradenton trip expenses: $415.66

Random: $316.50.* This includes a haircut for Kimberly, fishing gloves and a small mirror for Jeff, navigation lights app, batteries, a cable and lock for the dinghy, two plastic cutting boards, a bag for our hatch boards, water repellant spray, an extra 5 gallon collapsible water jug, and a marina tip.

Total: $8.465.09

September, 2018 through January, 2019 monthly average: $5,263.78

I hope this is helpful.

This is very helpful, thank you, as we're fine-tuning our boat-living budget at this time. I just need to know how you manage to get healthcare insurance and service for only $176/mo! Add a 0 to that figure and it's about what we have to shell out per month, and we're both in fairly good health for 60+ yr olds. We're moving onto a boat, hopefully by this fall (purchase pending), and will be living on a smaller budget than in the big house... but unfortunately not that small Best of luck!

Our cruising costs - month five for a middle-aged couple on a modest boat.

What level of life Insurence costs $950 a month?
$300 a month boat Insurence?
$240 a month for dog food?
$1000 a month marina?

Surely these numbers aren’t correct?

Was that to be 3200 per month or actually per year like you have stated?
