Re: Our cruising costs - month 23 for a middle-aged couple on a modest boat.

I feel like one of the Four Yorkshiremen - "we DREAM of only havin' to pay $205/month on a marina slip"....

It costs that per week at my local (regional city) marina.

That's "casual rate". If you are 'long term' it drops to $105/wk paid quarterly in advance.

But that's still $420 / mth - i.e. DOUBLE what Mrs Hoops is shelling out.

And that's Aussie dollars, worth only 75c US, so multiply by 1.25 and your $205 is stil only AUS$256.25.

Sheesh.

Don't be too envious. This is hands down the least expensive marina we have run across on the entire U.S. East Coast. The $420/month that you pay is a really good rate for a slip. Typically the rates we've seen for our 30 footer are $500 - $600 unless it's somewhere in the middle of nowhere - there are a few exceptions here and there of course. I think Sailorboy has a good deal where he is in Jacksonville, FL.

This $205 is absolutely an aberration, and surprisingly we aren't really in the middle of nowhere. But that's why we're here.

LOL. That makes more sense, but even then your US$500-600 is AU$625-750, and that's a small, regional, marina.

Big city marinas are even more.

Re: Our cruising costs - month 23 for a middle-aged couple on a modest boat.

I called one of the larger marina operators in NSW, who don't publicise their rates online, and this is what they sent me. Remember to multiply by 1.25 to get approx levels in US$.

Nelson Bay: (Port Stephens, regional NSW, well to do area)

  • $110 per day
  • $1,740 per month
Rushcutters Bay: (Sydney Harbour, close to CBD, bit open to easterlies and northerlies)
January
  • $145 per day
  • $2,385 per month
February
  • $100 per day
  • $2,120 per month
The Spit (Sydney Harbour, quieter area, protected from all directions)

January
  • $125 per day
  • $1,905 per month
  • $45 per day (swing mooring)
  • $595 per month (swing mooring)
February

  • $80 per day
  • $1,580 per month
  • $35 per day (swing mooring)
  • $520 per day (swing mooring)

I think you mean multiply by .75 to get approx levels in US$. Unless the currency markets have gone and pulled a covid-19 on me.

The point is the OP posted real life number for HER. Others need to adjust based on THEM.

Wow! I'll be some of those places rival or exceed cities like Boston or NYC here.
