Our cruising costs - month 21 for a middle-aged couple on a modest boat.

I've decided to get caught up with my posts of our monthly costs.

May was our 21st month of cruising full-time on our Bristol 29.9.

We had a first in May – zero spending in restaurants/entertainment thanks to Covid. “Entertainment” consists of one-off expenditures like movie tickets, museum or festival admissions, etc. Not something like Netflix which is a subscription.

As far as traveling goes, in May we ripped off the very-sticky velcro and went from Vero to Beaufort, SC.

Here we go:

Groceries/Non-food Groceries/Alcohol: $631.67

Gasoline/Diesel: $70.97

Medical: $14.34

Cell data, iCloud storage, and Garmin inReach subscription: $112.34

Marina: $416.63 (July and August slip on the Chesapeake paid in advance)

Laundry: $7.00

Restaurants/Entertainment: $0 (this is a first, and only because of Covid)

Annual life insurance payment: $767.50

Miscellaneous boat stuff: $71.39 (diesel oil, bottom cleaner)

Subscriptions and Random: $123.66 (Netflix, Prime, New York Times, tips, etc.)

Total: $2,215.50

2020 Monthly average: $3,150.12

2019 monthly average: $3,457.97

2018 monthly average (September – December): $4,465.95

Monthly average since starting to cruise: $3,576.67

A cruising friend who just started out last fall said a sailboat is a trawler with a backup plan.
