Not for nothing were storm lanterns called "kerosene lamps" in days of yore, tho I must admit that I've
head them called "parafin lamps" even in the Sceptered Isle.
Sconce types were always provided with a little "lid" mounted an inch or so above the chimney to catch the soot. Nevertheless, the combustion
exhaust spread out from under the chimney into the room and carried greasy soot with it, unless the wick was set quite low and kept well trimmed.
I keep a few around for decorative purposes and to handle B.C.Hydro ("Beastly Hydro") outages. They are fed with extravagantly expensive "lamp oil" that MyBeloved buys in 75ml quantities from "upscale"
interior decorating establishments.
I'll bet that "lamp oil" = kerosene :-0)!
