Multihull or money aside

Hi sailors,

I want to ask you a simple question , I guess you experienced liveaboards have great opinion about this;

Do you prefer to buy a 40ft multihull and have 5.000€ extra money to spend per month ?
or
Do you prefer to buy a 43ft monohull and have 2.000€ extra money to spend per month?

Your question makes no sense.

A 40 foot multihull will not be significantly cheaper than a 43 foot mono hull--all other things being equal (which they never are).

In your example you can have both, the comfort of the 40ft multi and $5k mo.

Your assumption seems to be that space==comfort. That might be true for you, but it is certainly not for everybody.

I find the sea motion of a multihull very uncomfortable. So I would take both the comfort of the monohull AND the money. Double winner for me!

For a couple, or for single handing, the extra space of a multihull has never appealed to me. I would rather have a monohull with its better weight carrying capacity and (usually) better sailing ability.

My best answer - ask the Admiral.

For us it will be the Cat. You'll save more on the monohull in the long run, in cats everything doubles the costs, two engines, more expensive marinas, two hulls to paint...

But also the double fun, no heeling, more stable, way more living space, less draft, faster downwind, better sleep.

I've got an OK for a cat, but a NO for a monohull.

I see that but think like this;
if you buy the multihull it will be your only and most valuable asset nothing else.
12 months in the boat and less vacations and so.
if you buy the monohull, maybe 6 months in the boat another 6 months you can go for vacation,maybe you can buy another toy like can am spyder and so.
What I am trying to explain is if you were on a tight budget like me which one you would choose?
Only aspect is not the comfort of the boat , think of other things you can add.

Its not a tight budget , it depends on purchasing power of money. You can live half a year in Thailand or 2 months in Greece. Your location is just important.

Let's put it to the next level: consider buying a kayak instead, do some river paddling and have a decade long holiday somewhere backpacking, whatever makes you happy.

We had similar discussions. No one else can decide it for you.

Sailing is the slowest and most expensive type of traveling, but it is a lot of fun too.

I know I am going to spend my money trying find the best answer for myself but I am trying to learn from your experiences. What you may have done different?
I own a motor yacht for 5 years , it was fun and I was so lucky I even did not lose a penny when I sold it but it may have gone completely opposite.
I have no room to make a mistake again .

I think your numbers are still wildly off and distorting the question.

Assuming a married couple around 50yr old, an extra 3000euro will require around 800-850,000 euro in an immediate annuity (not recommending just setting a baseline)...no way going from an equivalent mono to cat in that size range should be even half that amount.
