"You can raft along side us but we are leaving at 5am to catch the tide".

I should add rafting is very popular (essential) in many harbours in NW Europe.

Well, Rich, in the last 6 years we have sailed over 6000 miles, while using less than 400 gallons of diesel. A lot of that was at anchor charging batteries. So I think 80% sailing is about right. But for us, the best moment of the day is when we set the sails and turn off the engine.

Ain't that the truth. We anchored in a nice little bay off the German north sea coast only to have a ton of boats start rafting up to us. Nice people but come on. Then my little 6 year old hollered down to us: " Mommy, they are naked!". Forgot that Germans can not do anything without taking their cloths off. Kept being reintroduced to that reality when we sailed into the Baltic coastal areas. Its evidently expected and no permission needed(rafting up, clothing part optional).

Re: Most frequent lie encountered while cruising

1) Our passage only took x days.
2) We anchored at x for several days and experienced no issues
3) The marina there is good value.
4) We sail everywhere (the only time I believed that was when the Pardeys said so).
5) If you help me with mine then I shall help you with yours.........
6) Officials saying 'you have to pay this charge for xxxx'. Damn liars.
7) Marina's/harbours saying come on in - the fee's are cheap. Beware Grand Comore.
8) Yes there is free WiFi and free potable water.
9) The holding at X is really good for anchoring.
10) Can I borrow x and return it tomorrow morning (usually a critical tool).

Overlooked that one .......and perhaps that is because they are the ones on Kenomacs list. Mind you, I have not run aground either in the last 24 months (but at least once a year before that).

How about-- "We're going to need to change those zincs at least every 3 months. So, if I could just have your credit card, we'll set you up on a schedule."

Didn't take me long to figure out, in my case, that wasn't right.
Cheers, Pappy

Re: Most frequent lie encountered while cruising

I'll be there to start work on it at 9am.

And this conversation from our regular cab driver in the Bahahahamas.
"So you're doin' de big shop today. When you sail outa Marsh Harbour?"
"We're going cruising for two weeks, then heading back to Lauderdale...So, how much to hire your cab for two hours".
"Doan worry...same as al-wees..When you comin back?"
"There's a lot of the world still to see...maybe never".

The result was predictable and expensive, and given my cruising history, most people would not have thought I'd get caught so easily.

Re: Most frequent lie encountered while cruising

I must explain on behalf of my countrymen. When an Aussie says "No worries mate, she'll be right". He/she is being courteous. The sentiment is usually offered following a slightly negative event such as, "I'm sorry, I scratched your topsides with the dinghy", or "Jeez Mate..it seems I just drank the last beer". The Aussie is not saying anything other than 'Don't be concerned about it, it doesn't worry me'. He is not implying a warranty, or expressing a false opinion, he is merely trying to impress upon you that there will be no negative consequences and that any further action is not worth the hassle.
