Month 55 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Spent the month in the Bahamas. This month could be a good example of the “not counting” principle of reporting cruising costs by not counting medical and the new life vests I ordered ($880 of the months costs). But cruising and living costs are the same to me and my bank account doesn’t know the differences. So, I report total out of pocket costs and let readers decide how to apply to themselves for planning if desired.

General living – have you see the prices of beer in the Bahamas? Especially in out islands where it may be 2x the “mainland” price! Then there is coke, $0.52/can in Nassau, $0.88/can in Marsh Harbor, $1.50/can in Hopetown. Anyway grocery, beer, supply runs, sundries, clothes, “other” etc. for the month was “normal” even though we held back and went through about half the stores in the freezer and dined out a lot (at least dollar wise).

Boat costs were just some new inflatable life vests with harness. Defender had a great deal on them, and I had been wanting so ordered and will pick up when I get back to the States. This maybe could be counted as “clothes”, but to me it is a boat expense as if not for the boat I would not have gotten.

Dining out and entertainment costs were kind of high. It just costs more to do here even at “local” places if you can find one open.

Fees were credit card cash back.

Communication was cell phones, a month of WIFI service for Bahamas, and a month of in Reach service.

Marina cost was 6 days on a mooring in Hopetown waiting a weather blow (just to get hammered a week later by an unforecasted 60 mph blow).

Medical/dental was monthly ACA plan payment, plus testing copays from 3 months ago and physical therapy copays from over a year ago still showing up.

The total expenses were $ 3,260.93. Cost breakdown as follows for planners and hecklers and spreadsheet attached:

General Living - Food, soda, alcohol, clothing, sundries, other - $ 1,000.33
Boat costs - upgrades, repairs, maintenance - $ 252.13
Fuel (diesel, gas, propane) - $ 172.44
Dining and drinking out - $ 797.34.
Entertainment - $5.00
Communication, storage, shipping - $ 278
Fees – $ -38.76
Marina - $ 120.00
Electric - $ 0
Medical - $ 674.45

Sailorboy,

For what it is worth. I greatly appreciate the detailed explanations and breakdown of your expenditures. Your spreadsheets have helped me out a lot!!

Someone like myself can speculate all day long about how much it really costs to live and maintain the cruising lifestyle, but nothing beats real world numbers.

I know that it is a pain to keep such comprehensive records each month. Just know that you are providing many of us with valuable insight and a realistic view of costs.

I really only takes about 1 hour/month. Takes about as much time to write the story and post it as just tracking the numbers (90+% comes right off my credit card statement). People who say it takes too much time are just making excuses because they don't want others to know.

Glad you find it useful.

Great post, as usual.
And the added detail about costs in the Bahamas are especially helpful.
Much appreciated!

I am always amused by the price of beer in the Bahamas. In Nova Scotia 12 Heineken cost about $30 Can. Keiths, the local brew about $5 less, our microbreweries about $5 more. When we go to the Bahamas, we think it great, it's less than home

Thank you very much once again! Interesting note about the non-forecasted 60 MPH wind! Hope all was OK! Good info to keep in mind!

Sailing in the Windward's 2 years ago I was shocked they had the audacity to charge for local beer what we have to pay in Canada. Beer in Canada better though. Simple solution was to switch to Rhum and ice.

I respectfully submit that they don’t want to know themselves.🤔. (filed under ‘ignorance is bliss’)

thank you for your great posts as normal. I have sailed to many of the places you sail so really get a feel for how you are living. Have not been able to get to the Bahamas for a couple of years so really enjoy looking at it through your eyes.

Thank you for posting these! They are really useful for those of us looking at our bank accounts and plotting our jailbreaks....

Eegnorant question: You say "reach service"—what magic is this?

inReach is a satellite tracking device that has email functions, sos, and weather forecast ability. It is so our family and friends know where we are.
