Month 49 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Got out of Jacksonville FL and are heading to the Keys.

General living - Grocery, beer, supply runs, sundries, “other” etc. for the month were a little high. We did a little stock up for the trip south and we got some new rugs for the boat (should have called that a boat expense).

Boat costs were mid cost. Got a return on a refrigeration hose from last month, got the bottom cleaned, got a rearm kit for the life vests, got some hoses and wires etc.

Dining out and entertainment costs were back into our “normal” range with a few family dinners and a couple of beer/pizza nights out with cruising friends.

Entertainment costs were high as we got new bikes to have the next few months at least.

Communication was cell phones with internet and data, and for reactivation of our in Reach unit.

Marina cost was a month slip in Jacksonville. Electric was all the power we wanted at the dock (missing that air conditioning!).

Medical/dental monthly ACA plan premium, a copay and parking to make a specialist visit.

Transportation costs were gas and tolls for the car.

The total expenses were $ 3,564.82. Cost breakdown as follows for planners and hecklers and spreadsheet attached:

General Living - Food, soda, alcohol, clothing, sundries, other - $ 1,846.03
Boat costs - upgrades, repairs, maintenance - $ 255.57
Fuel (diesel, gas, propane) - $ 37.84
Dining and drinking out - $ 428.16
Entertainment - $ 412.56
Communication, storage, shipping - $ 160.33
Fees – $ -72
Marina - $ 307.09
Electric - $ 21.20
Medical - $ 71.70
Transportation and travel - $ 96.34
Gifts - $ 0
Water - $ 0
Registration - $ 0
Insurance - $ 0

Thanks for the post!

If you don't mind: what bikes did you get, and how are you storing them on the boat?

cheers - Dan

Just a couple of 26” wheel 6 speed cruisers from Walmart. Right now they are in the car, but i know from last year i can take 1 apart and get it into a stern locker. The other i can take apart and put in the forward garage berth.

These are our third set of bikes the past 4 years. We normally only get if going to be in a location a few months and have sold them or donated to the marina after in the past.

Nice to see the entertainment/dining costs a bit higher. Good times!

The car:

I’m curious if you move that to the keys or if you are just referring to a rental car.

Gotcha. Thanks.

When I was a bit more of a stationary liveaboard moving the boat each season, I used to do the same.

Usually had to pay a marina to keep it, but got lucky with municipal parking once.

Funny fact:

It takes as long to drive from the Hamptons in NY to Newport, RI as it does to sail there on a slower monohull.

[QUOTE=sailorboy1;3257612

The total expenses were $ 2,780.43

General Living - Food, soda, alcohol, clothing, sundries, other - $ 1,061.64 /QUOTE]

Kept feeling the math was wrong so rechecked the category i felt was high. Corrections to post 1 above and new spreadsheet attached.

It was a cheap month

Thanks again for the update SB. Wish I was on my way back to Marathon already! I will have to endure a few months of winter cold this year here in MT. But should be back by Mar.

Safe Travels!

P.S. Just curious, do you go ICW or Coastal when heading from JV back to Marathon?

We do whatever makes sense for the conditions. So far this trip we went out of St Johns and in at Pounce. Currently at Ft Pierce and hoped to go out, but there is front that has been here for days. So going down icw to Lake Worth to wait and go out again and down. Might have just stayed at Vero Beach and waited, but couldn't take feeding the bugs any longer.

Your account is surprisingly similar to my own experience. It should prove useful to planners. Many thanks for your openness.

Even though I am not a full-time cruiser, I fully enjoy reading your informative updates.
