Month 47 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Still sitting in Jacksonville FL doing the “living” part of the thread title. We are staying here for the summer hot/hurricane season, waiting the world opening back up, and doing boat projects. BTW - if you are reading this be sure to follow Cthoops budget threads here for a "small" boat story.

Grocery, beer, and supply runs, sundries, “other” etc. for the month were “normal”.

Boat costs were kind of high considering! Got the boat bottom cleaned. Never fails that no matter where or when I get the bottom cleaned the diver gives me the “growth here is higher than other places and this year has been the worst I have seen” story. Most of the rest of boat costs were hoses, wiring, fittings etc. to install my used Spectra watermaker, which added up to around $500.

Dining out and entertainment costs were low due to virus considerations Did eat/drink out a couple of times and got a kindle book and renewed a subscription.

Communication was cell phones with internet and data. Since we really use the phone more for video streaming Netflix etc. and as hotspot for internet, they are as much entertainment as communication.

Marina cost was a month slip in Jacksonville. Electric was all the power we want at the dock (air conditioning is great!).

Medical/dental monthly plan premium, 2 teeth cleanings and a dental bite guard

Transportation costs was gas and tolls for the car.

The total expenses were $ 2,984.70. Cost breakdown as follows for planners and hecklers and spreadsheet attached:

Food, soda, alcohol, clothing, sundries - $ 1,120.78
Boat upgrades, repairs, maintenance - $ 698.35
Fuel (diesel, gas, propane) - $ 9.00
Dining and drinking out - $ 257.03
Entertainment - $ 96.72
Communication, storage, shipping - $ 98
Fees – $ -36.64
Marina - $ 307.09
Electric - $ 21.20
Medical - $ 347.70
Transportation and travel - $ 83.22
Gifts - $ 0
Water - $ 0
Registration - $ 0
Insurance - $ 0

Well I'm glad to see food as the biggest expense. There for a while I thought you might be starving.
Marina fee was cheap but Jacksonville? Why?

I don't have a "food" category

What is wrong with Jacksonville? Other than it is a craphole, but that doesn't make it much different than most places.

It’s worth twice the price for the air conditioning! Excellent deal.

AC would be at the top of my list if I simmered in Florida.

I eat food. The cost of which is included in a item that also includes everything not clearly in the others. I did it this way at the start thinking everyone would r buy food, soda, alcohol, clothes, sundries, get haircuts, wash their clothes and other stuff that falls into general “living”. But maybe they would not spend money on entertainment things like movies or sightseeing, ever go to a marina and if they did ever get power and water, maybe they would never buy fuel, have medical costs to worry about, carry boat insurance, buy a birthday or Christmas gift.

I don't write down what i spent money on each day. I use my credit card for 99% of things i buy. End of month i use the statement to break the total down into the categories. I have no idea what was gotten on August 1 for $102.23 at Publix grocery store. But i can pretty much assume it fits into the first line item on the spreadsheet. At same thing I assume a West Marine or Defender is about the boat and not about lunch meat or bread. The hardest are Walmart and Amazon charges, so sometimes I just guess as to the breakdown.

Could you be so kind as to break down your category that covers food? We want to compare beans with beans.

Re: Month 47 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Hey Sailor Boy, where are you tied up in Jacksonville? I live here and am looking for a cheap place to put my boat. I don't understand all the crap you're getting about Jacksonville. It's not as hot as Lauderdale or Miami or anywhere south of here. We moved here from Omaha and I love it: even with the difference in temperature. If you're still here, I would like to stop by and say "hello".
