Month 36 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

It’s been 3 years now and the spreadsheet attached has all of it.

Spend The whole month in a slip in Gulfport, MS to have electric for the air conditioning and to be in a set place with a plan for hurricanes. But we spent 1 week in New Orleans, which was the reason we came this way to begin with.

Did grocery, beer and supply runs as normal.

Boat costs were low and only included some winch servicing parts and some new curtains.

No fuel this month.

Ate and drank out a lot. Of course, the whole week in New Orleans was eating and drinking (more drinking I think).

Entertainment includes going to the movies once, some books, and entrance type fees for places in New Orleans.

Communication was for our cell phones. These are also entertainment as we use the data to stream video and the hotspots for internet as the wifi/internet here is terrible.

No marina costs this month as it was paid last month.

Transportation and travel costs were car/gas and streetcar for the week in New Orleans, and the local bus in Gulfport.

The total expenses were $ 3,012.94 of which $1,369.03 had something to do with going to New Orleans. But then some of those costs would have occurred during the week if we had stayed on the boat. Cost breakdown as follows for planners and hecklers:

Food, soda, alcohol, clothing, sundries - $ 1,062.97
Boat upgrades, repairs, maintenance - $ 156.91
Fuel (diesel, gas, propane) - $ 0
Dining and drinking out - $ 1,103.64
Entertainment - $ 226.89
Communication, storage, shipping - $ 97.52
Fees – $ -41.69
Marina - $ 0
Electric - $ 0
Medical - $ 0
Transportation and travel - $ 406.70
Gifts - $ 0
Water - $ 0
Registration - $ 0
Insurance - $ 0

That mainsail won't be cheap.

You're doing great, SB! You're the model we're using as a guide.

You’ll love the new mainsail. We couldn’t believe the difference when we got rid of the bedsheet that was masquerading as a sail.

Glad you had fun in New Orleans. It’s on my bucket list.

Re: Month 36 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Thanks again for the continuing reports.its helpful knowing things smooth out at some point.
We have finally moved aboard, and are still in the refit stage. Just today I spent your month budget on a new windless and chain:-) I can't wait till that covers the whole month.
I think we will be spending about 3 months worth at the annapolis boat show too. Ahhh, the fun of new toys, and memories of once having money;-)
Keep it up, you are helping a lot of us newbs.

Re: Month 36 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

I live across Lake Pontchartrain (on the North Shore) from New Orleans in Mandeville on Bayou Castine. Lake Pontchartrain is ideal for sailing. Shallow but consistent depth (10 - 15 feet) so very few concerns for running aground, virtually no tides to worry with, generally consistent SE winds, brackish water so not too salty, probably about 5 foot maximum swells but quick and easy access to the open gulf and the gulf islands, beautiful sun sets and amazing birding with bayous and rivers to explore , great restaurants, and Mandeville is very friendly with a city quay dock including electricity and water for transient boaters and an excellent boat yard.
