Monterey Live Aboard

We joined the Monterey marina waitlist about a dozen years ago, at the time there seemed to be no restrictions on living aboard. The rules, as I read them now may have changed. It sounds like a percentage of the boats at Monterey can be liveaboards and there is a waitlist for this. Does anyone know more about live aboard in Monterey? Does the marina monitor and control ow long a person stays on their boat?

Thanks
Chris

Re: Monterey Live Aboard

I don't know the situation in Monterey, but that trend seems to be new normal up and down the coast. In my own case I THINK that if I was living aboard and I wasn't making a big show of it and no one complained then I could probably get away with it. In Monterey are you talking about the moorings or the slips? How long do you have to be off the boat in between stays?

edit:
ok I see what you mean: https://monterey.gov/city_facilities...tes,_facts.php

15 liveaboards allowed in slips and 15 on moorings. Non-liveaboards can stay aboard for 14 continuous days out of 3 months if you inform the harbormaster.

Looks like someone has to give up their liveaboard slip and then they turn to the next one in line on the waitlist. That goes for the moorings too. Aer you on a liveaboard waitlist?

Good luck, I hope it works out for you!

Re: Monterey Live Aboard

The BCDC came up with some bs plan/number many years ago regarding liveaboards in marinas. The number is 10%. And that bs has gone across the entire west coast.

Living as a sneak aboard? You'd need to go talk to people in that marina and ask around. My 1st marina I ever lived in had a no liveaboard policy. I'd say at least 50 of us lived aboard for years. They eventually turned management over to Almar who raised rents considerably but also got rid of all the bad tennants. Fair exchange in my book

Re: Monterey Live Aboard

From what I read, you cannot be on the liveaboard waitlist until you are a license holder of a current mooring or slip. We have a mooring available for us but are on the standby list until we retire or decide to put a boat on a mooring.

I guess you could start playing games and put something on a mooring in order to get on the liveaboard waiting list so when we want a liveaboard permit 5 years from now we might be able to get one.

Re: Monterey Live Aboard

Thanks for the information. I was hoping to hear how strict the marina is for a boat that is well kept by a cruising couple.

If you can stay 14 continuous days, but you leave the mooring for a number of nights, does the 14 day clock reset? For the size of the harbor, it seems like a lot to monitor for folks who are being reasonable in their use and intent of the mooring.

Re: Monterey Live Aboard

Yeah that is how I read it too; you need to be a current slip/mooring holder to apply for the liveaboard permit. As far as how many days between the 14 day stay, I read that as 14 days total in a 3 month period, which I hope is wrong, it seems too restrictive to me. I am curious to know how they are monitoring the liveaboards on moorings as well. Given what has happened in other areas I wouldn't be surprised if they do regular checks of everyone, especially for head discharges. If you are on a mooring there do you have access to showers and all in the marina?

Re: Monterey Live Aboard

Moorings have access to all amenities and have free dinghy rack storage or can pay for in the water dinghy storage
