Re: Mate Sharing Barter Around Southold, N.Y.
You really don't sound old enough to own a boat, either that or you are terribly naive. Regardless, you should consider gaining some experience without actually owning a boat. How?, well at any marina you would find an owner working on their boat who might consider your offer to help. It might be bottom painting, cleaning, or any number of things, but you will gain insight as to what you would be getting yourself into. As "hamburking" posted, "a boat is a hole in the water that you pour money into". You don't have the money, so you certainly don't need a boat ! Get some on the water experience first.

Re: Mate Sharing Barter Around Southold, N.Y.
Hate to say it but I do believe the "nays" have it. Leave skid marks in the carpet, keep saving your money, and start hanging around people with boats. As an example: two young men recently showed up at the marina with a new to them 25 ft sailboat. There was an outboard bolted to the stern because the diesel was DOA. The whole boat was little more than a shell. They paid $2K. Two weeks later they sold the boat, supposedly for $2K. There are now chains on the boat for not paying dock fees.
Do you want to be them or whoever got scammed into buying that disaster? Just guessing, but even if the owner knew how to do the work, another $10K might make it usable.
There are people who buy these project boats but as a HOBBY. They have the time, the money, the skills, the tools, and the experience to restore one of these derelicts. Sadly, none of these attributes can apparently be applied to you.
I wish you well just as I wished the two young men that came to the marina. I offered to help but they could not afford the material for even the most basic repairs.
Sorry to burst the bubble but what you are proposing will do nothing but drain your bank account and leave you several years short of a boat you can sail.
Don't give up hope. There are still
ways to achieve your dream. There are many people on this forum with the same dream, keep an eye out and keep on asking questions. Personally message me or anyone else for specific questions. 99. 9 percent will be happy to respond.
Regards and best wishes,
Rich

Re: Mate Sharing Barter Around Southold, N.Y.
A boat that has had 5 " of water sitting in it for an undetermined length of time is alikely to have mysterious marine growth throughout the wet part. Lots of boats are wired through the bilges, so most likely looking at complete re-wiring as a start. The batteries are probably history, read up on them and their costs.
The broker is not being a truth sayer when he says it is only a little mould. It is entirely likely that there is rotten wood there, possibly bulkheads that will need to be replaces. It will not be--I promise you--just a new cushions, covers, and vinegar wash down.
The poor boat is starting to biodegrade. Quite possibly, the engine is beyond repair.
And now, for the sails. The acid from mildew's products of metabolization weakens dacron. Most likely those sails are all fragile and brittle, if not shredding.
The running rigging and standing rigging are also probably in need of replacement. Check costs. Learn what you're getting into. No one will be there to take care of you if you do it and it turns pear shaped.
You do not need a surveyor. Walking away from a boat with these major strikes against it just makes good sense.
Learn more, and when you start looking again, carry with you more knowledge.
Sorry to talk tough, but this is how I see it.
Ann

I'm confused? The title implied trading wives. The post was completely unclear as to what was going on.
Regardless, I don't think I would buy into it.

Re: Mate Sharing Barter Around Southold, N.Y.
Hi there mates,
A reply to yet another bashing, ( I never meant that someone should do anything they did not want to do. Never asked anyone to buy in. ) I mentioned that if someone was in my area if they wanted to come say hi, have any suggestions at a time of being present, that would be cool. If they liked a project, that too was acceptable, not like me saying you do this or that. No requirement .

Re: Mate Sharing Barter Around Southold, N.Y.
Methinks (and could well be putting letters in the mouth of the OP) that we have a culture and typo issue.
Mates in the US are usually seen as someone permanently attached to another, frequently for the purpose of reproduction. Much of the rest of the world thinks of them as we do "friends" ...
Barter could perhaps have been banter. What I got out of the original is someone to drop in and shoot the breeze, and bang ideas/concepts/opinions around regarding a potential distressed vessel's potential.
BICBW, and the OP really wanted to hook up and then barter the prize for something else ☺

Well, that was interesting. I guess I was being given divine guidance to stay out of it, as the feasibility reply I just tried to put up has disappeared due to server error, and it's not available by back-screen looking.
So, other than griping about the server which ate my reply, I'll stay out of it ☺

Even more interesting, technically, is that it magically appeared after I'd said I'd stay out of it. Ahhh. LOVE CF. ☺

Re: Mate Sharing Barter Around Southold, N.Y.
I would recommend you spend some time off the Island to look for boats. Go over on the ferry to CT/RI and you will find many more boats than here on Long Island. Plan to go to the Newport Boat Show in September to get ideas and dream. Take your time. Finding the right boat is rarely a quick job and sometimes it takes years.

In our case, it was several, also, and until I'd been aboard more than 200 boats, we didn't have a coalescence of our must-haves and our size/budget.
The latter grew very substantially over the period. But...
If you're looking for almost or actually free boats, hang out in all the sailing and cruising forums and/or groups in Facebook you can find. Pay attention, and you'll see many being presented. It's great to hang out in boat yards, but if you have another life, it's impossible to really haunt one, let alone many. That said, there are MANY - if not all - boatyards with vessels which can be had for a song, some of which are very worthy.
I've been counseling someone who's interested in M46x - of which I have more than a passing knowledge - and have suggested he stay away from a nearly-free example, as he's trying to get under way as cheaply as possible...
