Marina on Northish Westside Chesapeake for 8' Draft

Hello all,

We're looking for a marina to put the boat for the summer and winter somewhere along the north western coast of the Chesapeake or Potomac River that can take a 47' sailboat with 8' draft(and 66' air draft if there's fixed bridges. We only need 30a service. Price we're looking at is something $8/ft area or less. Would prefer floating piers but not mandatory. Trying to leave the boat somewhere protected while my wife and I work offshore. I found a few from research but the Chesapeake is so big I figured everyone has their favorites that they would be willing to share.

Appreciation in advance.

The two issues are your draft and the cost. Air draft is not a problem.
Jabins, Chesapeake Harbor and others in Eastport can handle the draft, but are expensive. Liberty Marina on South River is a cheaper option. Around Norfolk, perhaps Little Creek.

Herrington Harbour (North or South) are feasible. 20 miles south of Annapolis. North is a better maintenance yard. Might be a bit pricey, about $6k a year.

Look me up if you end up there.

North won't handle the draft. Could also look at Solomons Island. Several marinas, cheaper than Annapolis.

This marina can handle your boat. Even have a bathtub in the shower room.'

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I'll look them up. I was looking at Calvert, Harbor East, Herrington Harbor, Cambridge Yacht Basin and Anchorage marinas. Haven't called them but just their websites. I'm hoping to make calls this week if I get some time in Port.

Does the winters in this area require super winterizing or not really?

If you aren't looking for a fancy marina, Dennis Point marina off the Potomac can handle your draft with ease and is relatively inexpensive. It is well protected as well. Not sure of the depth at the travelift slip but they have a 75 ton lift. We are 6' 4" and they never even had to drop our backstay to pull us out.

Thanks, I will add them to the list to contact!

We used to keep our boat in the water all winter in DELAWARE City, which is a bit colder and with more ice than the locations you are considering. We lived aboard every other week no never “winterized” the boat.

Now if you are closing the boat up and moving ashore then things are different. Just like living anywhere else except that when you slip on the dock, as opposed to sidewalk, you fall in the water and drown.

Several marinas in the Baltimore Inner Harbor might qualify. No clue about costs. ActiveCaptain will have details about floating docks and so forth.

Winterizing is usually appropriate, especially if you won't be on board all the time. Usually not particularly difficult.
