Logistics::How to move boat gear from old boat in Florida to new Boat in France

We've sold our monohull in Florida and just bought a new one in France.
We're trying to figure out how to ship our belongings (lines, fenders, tools, dive gear, wetsuits, clothing, books etc...) to the new boat in La Rochelle. We've been stymied at every turn.

1) DHL and FedEx: $$$$$ for air freight. DHL 2700$ for a 50lb barrel of random goods: a dive compressor 1900$. Whew!
2) LCL: cheaper, substantially, not one has a rating of greater than 2/5 stars. Lost freight, stolen freight, no call backs.....
3) Pack it in your luggage on the plane: the most reasonable, but 4 bags at 50lbs per bag is around 1kUSD.
4) any way to NOT pay taxes yet again on our USED goods?
5) The easiest it seems is to simply sail the vessel to Florida and load it there? is that the most sensible option?

What have others done?
Are there logistics and or shipping companies anyone has been happy with?
So interested in any ideas...

Appreciated and exasperated...

Re: Logistics::How to move boat gear from old boat in Florida to new Boat in France

We did the same thing from California to New Zealand about 6 years ago using AMID Logistics:

AMID Logistics, LLC
1166 DeKalb Pike, Suite 113, Box 3
Blue Bell, PA 19422
Phone: 484-681-9918

We shipped a crate that was 8'x4' (standard plywood size) x3'. Total cost to the boat (remember, this was six years ago) was USD 800 ($450 for the ocean freight and the remainder last mile and paperwork). That did require, however, that we drop the crate at the logistics center. The first mile cost we were quoted was $1700 to move it about 15 miles from where we had it to the logistics yard. The last mile delivery in NZ was part of the quote.

On the other end we did spend about NZD 100 on a customs broker, but all the parts came in under the temporary import permit for the boat. Don't know how that works for France.

Only one data point, but I can say they responded to emails, answered questions, and were prompt with everything related to the shipment. We timed it so we were at both ends - dropped the crate, caught a flight two or three weeks later, and were on site in NZ when the ship arrived so that we could deal with things on scene rather than trying to be remote.

I would contact a moving company in your area, one that specialises in international relocations.

International Van Lines comes to mind, google for others.

Option 6 would be see this as an opportunity to get rid of old stuff.

People can't give books away; lines, fenders are penny items, relatively speaking.

Goods onto a Europalet. Marine shipping companies will load into a container. You pay by volume.

Talk to the agent they will help you fill the documents so that your USED personal items will be declared as temp imports not for sale in the EU. Then export (sail away) - before your temp expires.

Consult the landing Customs (France) with any specific questions - well in advance - and keep the copies of your correspondence with them - printed out, in a folio to use when collecting the palet in France.

A good local cargo shipping agent is your friend.

I'd take a hard look at the replacement value. Then look at the shipping costs. I moved 1,200 miles a few years. I spent $6K moving things that I then spent the next 12 months replacing anyway.

Even if replacement is a few thousand more, look at it like upgrading everything to new and avoiding the logistics headache. Sometimes the cheapest route isn't always the easiest or best.

Freight cost from the States are insane. Years back I bough some bronze parts from Florida and would've been cheaper to fly there, pack 80kg bronze in suit cases and pay for extra luggage on return to Europe. Found another route thou, a fellow sailor from Canada who bough half of the lot had cheap freight to Canada and from there equally cheap to Europe for my stuff.
