Far from a government job. Have been on boats all my life. Started my first real job at 17. Had my captains license at 21. by 25 i held my unlimited masters with a crew of 15 under me. I basically steeped on,around, or thru anyone who tried to get in my way.

There are plenty jobs like that in the real world, but they are disguised as work and most don't want to stay faithful to one career for 33 years.

The guy has a plan folks, he wants to haul a couple touring bikes.(cool idea).You are not going to do that with a 40footer or anything smaller. It is kind of agrevating when people reply with totally different ideas to the OP. There was nothing about his post that would lead me to believe he didn't know what he was talking about. I think he has a hell of a plan.

A real cargo schooner, your talking a very big boat. Some marinas like big boats and some don't. Money talks. Yacht clubs often only want yachts, for some reason lost to me.
Building a boat is many, many hours. Days, weeks, years if working alone. I have built several 35' and up. Always with at least a helper and mostly with a crew. I think 80% of the people starting a boat of any size, never finish it. You need money up front and a lot of money in tools that save time. Some kind of crane for building bigger boats. Scaffolding, etc.
Work with a surveyor as you build so you get good insurance rates. Steel, you need to be a certified welder.
If you're going to build the boat inside, make sure the door is big enough.
You might be better off with somebodys unfinished project or maybe a boat that needs remodel.

You need to be a good welder to build a steel boat, but not certified. I have been welding since I was 8 years old and in the business, but never certified. (72 now).

But hopefully, after 30 years of full time, professional boating, he will not be totally tired of it and want instead to retire to the Arizona desert.

There was a huge one being sold for salvage as no one would buy it a few years back. I was trying to figure out how to have it hauled up to my property. Dig a big trench, gravel line it and a killer guest house for damn near free!
So what if a few planks and ribs are rotten! Recreational vehicle, no taxes! "yes sir, It's just stored on site, I trailer it to use it..."

No civilian gov't job pays that kind of retirement so I'm guessing he's a military man with 42 years in.. and as a tax payer I'm more than happy to pay his retirement after his service...
