Re: Liveaboard in Thailand?

Single use plastic pollution is a problem. We need to remember who gave them plastic.
Us so called “civilised “developed countries sold it to them for Corporate profits
before plastic they used banana leaf for cooking wrapping eating, so environmentally sustainable.
The country is developing and with it the infrastructure to deal with waste disposal.
However as Chotu mentioned the lack of hate discrimination and far less regulatory control makes it a winner.
You will find your happy place in Thailand, further North not so hot.

Re: Liveaboard in Thailand?

Emmalina I use an Agent for ease of language and I have found more respect from officials by employing one of their own. Share the wealth so to speak.
But once you learn the ropes you can easily do it yourself. I am a wealthy person
in Thailand, in my country Australia I am a poor retiree. My lifestyle here is so superior.
Matthew at Port Takola alway had a plan for a ferry service but Covid decimated his Business plan. I am sure once he has the customer base it will come.
I was first there just after the original Channel was opened.

Re: Liveaboard in Thailand?

No Boatyard, it was a quick nick name I used when I was first building my Cat in Australia years 20 years ago.
Never got around to changing, no need, don’t post much just lurking usually often dumbfounded by information posted. So I say little.
So my sailing Cat gone, then a power Cat now an old Aussie trawler just for fun.
Krabi works for me as the boat is timber and the ship yard still knows how to build and fix wooden boats. Shock horror “wood” yep 50 years old still strong!
But …. Looking again might go back sailing.

That it is
But what isn't easy for a vessel our size is finding somewhere to pull her out in central Indo.
You'd think with all those monster phinisi it'd be easy

They want $10,000 AUD to come out out for a week at Benoa on a trolley
Need to go another 1200nm to Jakarta before it gets back to some form of normality.

You bought Lifeline from memory right?

How big can they go at Krabi?
We are 60 ft, 65 tonne 7.5ft draft
I was thinking PSS Satun would be the spot but open to suggestions

Re: Liveaboard in Thailand?

Simi
Long time since I went to Satun and not with this ship. I think the river access depths could be a bit of an issue from memory would need really big Springs.
The way points were never perfect due to changing mud movements.
But worth a look. I have heard some Management infighting so…… but they did good work. No idea on prices now.
I am sure the Shipyard here can do you they drag out some huge steel and wooden ferry’s and fishing boats out here, way bigger than you. They have dedicated big boat slip and a standard slip feeding the handstand area.
Same thing on the high tide on a trolley. It is old fashioned but effective.
My last haul out last year i scraped all the old anti foul off back to clean timber to check the planks ( all original) some patching to caulking, repainted, 4 coats, in out, hard stand, they did all the work over 7 days about $3500 AU. I supplied the paint. But they can. Also you are a bigger boat so cost up a little.
The most I spent so far has been $5000 for anti foul, full hull repaint 7 coats more than 2 weeks up. I supplied paint.
Close to Krabi town quite easy walk, hotels etc. No need to stay on the ship.
Are you in SE Asia? That is my experience hope that helps.

Nope, but we have all the stuff that was holding us back sorted now.
Looks likely we'll be having a run at it early next year
Thanks

Liveaboard in Thailand?

I built my first boat in Ballina but out at Smith drive on Emigrant creek and bought most of the stuff for that boat from Keith Barlow and his daughter Jenny. I imagine that a lot of quality work went into the building of your trawler, Keith was a very hard master.
You’re certainly in the right place for timber boatwork now, I was interested to hear about the change in attitude towards Yachtie’s in Langkawi, I left and returned to Australia during the pandemic and I was hoping that Langkawi would remain unchanged but it seems that’s not the case at all.

Watching this thread closely, currently living in Cambodia and looking at boats in Phuket / Langkawi area.
