Question Liveaboard in Hawaii (Oahu)

Hi there. My ex-wife wants to move to hawaii and is considering living aboard, but she really doesn't have a maritime community of her own to talk about it. Is there anyone here who is a hawaii liveaboard and can you tell me the pros and cons of living aboard in hawaii?

As in many places, hawaii apparently discourages living aboard, but I think that's for the same reasons as everywhere. So long as we don't start making a mess of our boats and docks, we should be fine right?

Anyway, if any of you have experience with living aboard in hawaii, please let me know. I would like to help her out if I can.

Thanks,
Scot

Re: Liveaboard in Hawaii (Oahu)

There is a long wait list at most the state marinas and yacht clubs on Oahu just for a slip. The three yacht clubs do not allow live aboards (wink wink). She may be able to get a slip at Keehei not the best place or Waianae or Haleiwa not sure about getting a legal live aboard.
Hawaii is not very boater friendly

Ala Wai Harbor the last time I checked had a 2-5 year waiting list to get legal liveaboard status.

Hawaii is a great place to liveaboard if too could only find a slip and a liveaboard permit. Been on the list for a 35'-40' slip in the Ala Wai going on 4 years. There have been some liveaboard rentals but you'll have to dig to find them and lucky to find one available. No official liveaboards in Honokohau on the Big Island but only took me 5 years to get a recreational slip. Long wai just to sneak aboard.

There are some cruisers who take advantage of the 4 month temporary slip in any given year. That can give you a stay of 8 months from September through the following April. Always have.a few cruisers in temp. slips wintering over.
