Live aboard - UK, South West

Hi there.

My husband and I have taken the decision to buy a larger sail boat (12.8m/43 ft) that we could live on and travel longer distances with our 5 yr old. Its a whole new lifestyle we're taking on and fed up with the rising house prices and want some more adventure in our lives.

We're in the South West of England and looking for a marina that will allow live aboards - seems to be a dirty word in some places??!! Why IS that?? So, we'd love some insight from anyone in that next of the world/UK that can recommend marinas from Bristol to Devon - open to Dorset but Hampshire (Southampton) seems very expensive. We may not have rent/mortgage to pay but we don't want to spend a fortune...

Any advice welcome please and thank you!

In Poole its possible to get a winter berth in one of the marinas in Holes Bay, downside is there's limited electric, overload cut out is low side.. April to October would have to be on a mooring.
That's what I used to do.
You may have luck in Weymouth but suggest you don't go in announcing you plan to live aboard also stay low profile.
Brighton is another place you could try..
Otherwise maybe Falmouth.

Thank you for that info. Yes, I'm usually one for open-ness and honesty but this is one area where it appears holding back is of more benefit!!

You might try Nos on the Dart. Lots of building work going on and much completed so perhaps the charges might be a bit cheaper until its all complete and then, well move.

Torquay I thought a little bit down and out, but the harbourmasters side is cheap, showers just about acceptable.

Portland perhaps? Brisk in the winter :-)

Cowes and even Lymington do long term sublets during the winter. We stayed in Berthon which was very favourable at £20 a night for a while.

The loos in Berthon have under floor heating, fluffy towels and little bottles of smelling scents even in the gents. We can't afford the summer prices but winter, that's okay and Lymington a really nice place to stay. The sort of place Country File would film.

No specific knowledge but you might try Mylor in Falmouth Harbour, or one of the several marinas in Plymouth?
