live aboard priorities for a marina

We have around 22 years of living aboard a sailboat, first as a couple and then as a family but I'd be curious of the other live aboards what things they find the most import features of a marina.

No other liveaboards in the marina

No bareboat charter activity

Marina has its own shipyard , marine store

Marina is a bicycle ride from shopping

Safe, protected from surge

Double moorings to keep you clear of the dock

Good police presence

Re: live aboard priorities for a marina

Ability to work on your boat at the dock (one of the reasons we are on the commercial dock).

Only 10% of total slips are liveaboard.

Proximity to civilization-we are in a smaaaalll town, one market and 2.5 restaurants. Although I cherish many of the advantages of a village, there are times I would like to go to a movie, or a new restaurant without traveling over 20 miles each way. As they say here "It's not the middle of nowhere, but you can see it from here:".

Security.

Re: live aboard priorities for a marina

i have lived aboard since 1990. this list is a very entitled and privileged list. most items on list donot exist. i used to want wifi and a laundry center but those donot happen.
best o luck to you finding a marina with all that stuff and cheap.

Why do you guys want to be the only ones living on a boat?

Re: live aboard priorities for a marina

Wow, is this a marina or a luxury hotel we're talking about?

When I'm tied to the dock I'm happy to have power (not even on the list) and access to water. Wifi is great to have, as are showers and laundry. I've never even considered the rest of the list of "wants".

To be fair though, I only live at a marina as long as required. This usually happens at the beginning and end of my season, for a few weeks on either end.

Power & Water are expected.

Laundry & Showers are preferred.

WiFi is nice to have but Iíve rarely, even in the most high end marinas, seen this to work well at all slips.

Anything past that is a plus.

With more than one live aboard the place develops the ambience of a trailer park

Barking dogs , boat junk on the dock , angry wives and decrepit boats

I don't know where you are but I wouldn't want to live there either.
On the other hand, I haven't experienced this since 2014.

Sorry, man.

PS The angry wives comment is definitely off the mark, just to be clear...
I live on a dock with 3 of "the wives" including myself and you're just wrong...

It's funny, but people want a dock where they can work on their boat, but nobody else can...

Re: live aboard priorities for a marina

We wanted/needed to work on our boat and told the marina. They asked us if we "minded" going to the commercial dock and we have been happily sanding, grinding, painting ever since along with all the other boats fishing and pleasure ever since.

No, it doesn’t. You have not stayed at Brunswick Landing Marina I assume? A great many if not most boats are cruisers, living on their boats and it’s no trailer park.
However the town itself left something to be desired so we moved. Where we moved to is right outside of Jacksonville, has laundry, good WiFi, a pool, a very upscale lounge, and is located in a nice neighborhood with a Public’s and West Marine, and many places to eat etc within about 1/4 mile away, and the Marina has bicycles for you to use.
During Hurricane season there are quite a few cruisers living aboard, but the live aboard population grows tremendously in Nov or so when people up North come South and stay on their boats, then it’s time for us to leave, cause these people aren’t cruisers by any stretch of the imagination, they turn their noses up at cruisers, just as it seems you are.

In truth it’s simple, pay trailer park prices, and it’s likely you May stay in a trailer park type of environment, nicer places to stay often cost more, and sometimes to escape the trailer park, you have it move to the Suburbs.

But you remind me of the “I don’t want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member”.

The secret is to rent a berth inside a shipyard

Marinas always frown on boat work that may irritate neighbors

The classic good berth at the shipyard routine ...for genuine, high class , world cruisers ...is to approach the ship yard for a berth and a job

The job is typically unpaid, the berth is dirt cheap ... you become weekend and public holiday customer service , watchman and the general lend a hand guy.

These days this setup has become very hard to find

Re: live aboard priorities for a marina

For instance, in Annapolis many marinas offer most of these things, Port Annapolis Marina has everything but a beach (at a very expensive price). Others marinas in different areas such as down south in Herrington Harbor have everything. Of course, this is asking for an ideal list of what people would want as a priority. And its frankly aimed for things that a cruising family would want. Live-aboards come in two different groups, one is the family cruiser with professionals, the other is the bitter barely employed divorced guy drinking on a boat. Marinas, if they want live-aboards, cater to the first group, the second group is a reason why marinas don't want any live-aboards.
