Laundry Aboard While on the Hook
I'm really thinking of taking the next step. Maybe doing it aboard will motivate me to not let the loads pile up so high. Not to mention saving a lot of money, and getting it down to a science by the time I run further South.
So...
Is a washboard really necessary, or can you kind of just rub the clothes against each other?
If so, where would you get one locally?
So far no luck at Ace Hardware. I do see a few on Amazon, though.

HAHA! Thank you sir. You just saved me even more money, storage space, and another item that would rust.

I suppose that really depends on the amount of bowel control you have...

There is a funky little barrel that you throw your clothes in it's attached to a frame with a handle to rotate the barrel around so it agitates a little like a proper washer, it isn't big but it's enough to put some shirts in etc, but I haven't seen one at a chandler now for a few years, I wonder if they are still for sale.

Re: Laundry aboard while on the hook
I would say bucket and dance is the best option.
I found bike touring that if you do laundry once a day, it only takes about 5 or 10 minutes.
I would use my laundry water to then wash something else, deck, countertops, dishes, you know, save water.

I go with the BOOGIE, and you end up with clean feet too, and remind me not to eat on Tager's boat

+1 for the plunger and bucket.
Use ammonia rather than soap and you can reduce, or eliminate completely, the amount of fresh water required for the rinse.

And after you've tipped the contents over the side stand by to scoop up the unconcious fish for your supper...
time it for the afternoon when they're sheltered under the hull...

Ammonia is highly toxic to marine animals.

Re: Laundry Aboard While on the Hook
Thank you, I did not know that! Only tried it out once to see if it worked, and it did, and very well at that. Used a quarter cup in a mostly full bucket of water, so no dead fish floating around afterwords, not even a minnow. Maybe just lucky eh?

Re: Laundry Aboard While on the Hook
When sailing we did laundry one of two ways. For big loads, we put a few gallons of fresh water and Joy in the bottom of a clean dinghy and the sloshing from towing or sitting at anchor for a few hours resulted in very clean cloths. For smaller loads, we just put the clothes in a plastic bag, added enough water and some Joy and put the bag in the dinghy and let it slosh for a few hours. Always worked....

Synthetic fabrics are easier to wash by hand and they dry quickly.
