Land/dock cart - what do you use?

I’m looking to upgrade my portable land cart or trolley, or whatever you call it. I use it when walking to shops, and for generally moving stuff on/off the boat. I’ve used this thing for years now, mainly b/c it stores small AND I got it for free:

It’s not very durable, has tiny wheels, and doesn’t carry a large load, but it is light and folds down to a small size.

What do you use when going ashore? Thoughts? Recommendations?

I'm going to grab one of these (google - big wheel folding wagon ). It doesn't fold up as small but has more capacity and the big wheels work for offroading.

That’s a good one dwedeking2. Won’t be as small to store on board, but the capacity and the wheels look great.

… not cheap though: $128.75(USD) at Amazon.

Re: Land/dock cart - what do you use?

I got a cart similar to above but with smaller wheels at Costco for about $50. Even so, it takes up a fair amount of room on board.

In some closet, I've got one of those folding-milkcrate contraptions too. Used it when teaching at the Community College, when I had to transport all lecture & lab supplies from home every day. The tiny wheels are its downfall - might be worth trying to frankenstein some larger wheels onto it? I doubt the plastic frame is sturdy enough to support a can of fuel.

I'm thinking that for living on board, the bicycle trailer will end up serving double-duty as a dock cart. It's got 11" wheels and is more robust than either of the above. Although the one I have is just an open frame that by default is bolted to a Samsonite suitcase (the travel case for the Bike Friday.) Fine for groceries, maybe not for cans of fuel. But maybe with some ingenuity... That suitcase is probably the largest single item that I would like to carry on board, and I haven't yet figured out where to stow it.

I'm thinking of one of these for $36
Should be able to carry several cartons of beer
Multiple 20 litre fuel containers.
Multiple 9kg gas bottles
And sturdy enough to ratchet strap them down

Google "folding bicycle trailer." There are some nice ones out there, but pricey!

Re: Land/dock cart - what do you use?

toddster8: the bicycle cart would be great, especially if you were using a bike a lot. But storage will be a problem for me, and I’m sure the price is steep.

This looks interesting. You got me looking. How about something like this:

Folding Hand Truck | Canadian Tire

(Seems to me Ann and Jim Cate may have told me about how they use something like this).

It’s not as versatile as a cart, but it would store easier.

Yep.
Storage is a priority for you but load carrying is a priority for me

I use one of those. It may not be all that durable but it’s cheap and I’m only on my second after over 1.5 years cruising

I've seen that somewhere... Home Depot? Costco? Looked more like lightweight luggage in person - too much load-bearing plastic. Probably would handle more than the milk crate thing, though.

I used to have one of those hand trucks that Simi 60 posted, too. I destroyed it, eventually, but only through repeated extreme use, well beyond its design specs, on the farm. It was great for suburbia. A bit too heavy and rustable I think, for my boat. YMMV.

I like the folding file carts. Cheap, but they will haul a jerry can and store small. Nothing larger would be practical for me. They are cheaper at office supply stores, but I've gotten mine for free (3 over 8 years). On those rare occations when I need more, I borrow a marina cart.

Re: Land/dock cart - what do you use?

Another category to search would be "folding shopping trolley," as in many countries, people cart their groceries home on foot.

BTW: 90% of the time, I actually tote stuff from the car to the boat and back with a plastic shopping basket. Which I also use for shopping. I probably have two or three of these things on board and one in each vehicle. They are pretty good for organizing and transporting a small project and all the tools needed to "do" it. I think I got a rack of 12 on Ebay, years ago, and they're still going strong.

Re: Land/dock cart - what do you use?

Yes, Mike, the one we use looks like the one in the Canadian tire catalog. We made up some straps for it, adjustable, with 1"webbing and belt buckles. We can stack up stuff, and wheel it around on smooth pavement, it is NOT fun on dirt tracks. We've used it for our luggage, traveling, too. We have some large, fiberglass reinforced shopping bags (from New Caledonia), that are quite large, and overlap the bottom a bit, but you can put a lot of thoughtfully packed groceries in them. It can take both of us to lift it onto a public bus. Usually, I carry the delicate perishable items in my back pack. The back packs, are also good for wine boxes. The cart we have is not really strong enough for two 20 l. full jerry jugs of diesel, but from the specs, and iirc, the Canadian tire one has a higher load limit than ours (from WM, many years ago) did.
