Yup, like the man said. Got seated once on a case against a punk entrepreneur accused of selling hard drugs. The defense attorney asked if I had ever used. I said I had no interest in poisoning myself and that anyone giving it to my kids or anyone else’s should swing. I was dismissed. Called three times in two years. I complained the third time, very inconvenient timing. They took me off the list. I was told that living aboard out of the country, with a US mail box and voter registration I could still get called and would be required to show up. Our daughter handles the mail. Very unlikely I would see the invitation or respond before the required date.

  1. Checked the box that says I don't live at that address.
  2. Wrote in the notes that it's only a mailing address
  3. Also, in the notes, explained that I live on my boat and will likely be out of state cruising at that time, possibly even out of the country
  4. Lastly, I wrote in the notes that by that date, I will also likely be a working on a freelance/contract basis, so if I don't work I don't get paid
FYI - I'm not BSing to get out, all of the above is true
What's wrong with that ? i did never heard from them again...

but you can also get out of jury duty for religious reasons.

people who are opposed to passing judgment on others because of religious reasons or personal beliefs dont have to serve jury duty courts can excuse people from jury duty for those reasons.
I refuse to pass judgment on others but i'm not religious i trashed my first summons nothing came of it i am excused indefinitely from further jury duty after my second summons i made sure of that i have never set foot in a courtroom...

There use to be a time that some professions were excused because they were self employed without help or provided health care or it would be extremely disruptive specially is you were in solo practice with limited coverage. They eliminated all those exceptions in my county.
So I take the fifth as to what I do with the summons.
Besides, they will never ever pick me after I let them know my views and because of my profession.

I can't remember where in the US but there is public shaming of no show jurors on Facebook and Billboards.. a medieval justice system and medieval punishment only difference is they now use modern technology, renewing your drivers licence seems to be a problem in some states.

The big joke is that i have a fake doctors note that got me excused indefinitely from jury duty 28 years ago the sad thing is that i had to lie and cheat because the courtroom critters disregarded my conscience and personal beliefs and threatned me with fines and jail if i didn't comply.

Re: Jury Duty . . . Yuck !

I think we will close this thread and move back to sailing and cruising topics. The original question was answered eons ago and cruisers Forum is really here to discuss jury service on a island out West.
