Re: Is liveaboard lifestyle a dying lifestyle

Yes and no, If you are land locked, you very likely use the boat to cruise, even for longer times. Liveaboard is in my opinion a replacement for a land home, living stationary on a boat in a small area, like at anchor, on a dock, in a marina and doing your regular businesses from there, or doing the snow birds life style between two locations to escape the weather.

Cruising and living on board without strings attached to a land life I would still call cruising, because the focus is on travel and not substituting a land home by a boat.

Cruising and living aboard are completely orthogonal, neither correlated nor mutually exclusive.

Can easily be both, or can be one without the other or do neither

and in any case still be on your boat 100 days or 365 per year, irrelevant to both.

No it’s not. Most full time cruiser and/or live aboards know here is a difference between part time, even long part time, and full time.

Not saying there aren't huge differences.

Just that IMO the days per year are not essential to the definitions of the two terms themselves.

A part time cruiser is still a cruiser.

A part time liveaboard is still a liveaboard.

Especially to the extent it's for contiguous months at a time.

It is, but it isn’t worth battling with you over it.

I part time lived on and weekend cruised my boat for 6 years. Never once in those days considered myself a live aboard or cruiser.

John, the essential factor in the definition of a true liveaboard is whether or not they have and maintain a land base dwelling. There is a definitive difference in the commitment level when you discard all land based ties. Until you have done this yourself, you won't understand the point that SB1 is trying to make.

Part time cruising is certainly still cruising, but again there is a big difference in the commitment level of the part and full timer. It does make a difference, one that I have experienced personally -- having made the transition myself many years ago.

I guess it is easy for the part timer to believe that there is little difference, simply because he has not experienced the change over.

But it's all good!

It's the difference like crushed into each other or got married.

This has become a somewhat ridiculous thread - since there is no accepted definition of what you are all talking about - who cares ? Each to their own and all that.

Hi Jim,
... if you are living full time on board but still own a shore side dwelling, I believe the commitment as a liveaboard can be just as strong.

The only difference is that one has a backup plan, if fate drives you ashore the other has not.

Liveaboard Commitment is an internal decision factor that we constantly weigh and measure.

It is balanced with other commitments you make to your loved ones and to your other self that stands to one side, when you make key decisions if different commitments conflict with each other

When life throws us a challenge like debilitating illness, family tragedy or just age and injuries catching up, you assess your options as if it were a new day.

Personally I would prefer to spend my final years onboard at a sunset anchorage, but would that be fair to my partner?

Unfortunately it is not always

Re: Is liveaboard lifestyle a dying lifestyle

I liveaboard (and cruise) for about 1/2 of each year. I have no land home. My boat is my only home, but due to a thing called Newfoundland winters, I don't liveaboard for 12 months.

So… what does that make me?

(not that I really care … I is what I is ).

A Newfie?

Just out of curiosity, where do you go in the deep winter?

Good one , although I’ve learned most islanders prefer the term “Newfoundlander.” “Newfie” has become a bit of derogatory term for some.

In fact, I’m not really a Newfoundlander yet, although me fadder was. So I guess that makes me a hereditary Islander.

We do different things in the winter. A few seasons ago we motorcycled around much of Canada and the USA. The past few winters we house sat in the Okanagan. This coming winter we’re looking after a hobby farm in Alberta, complete with horses and miniature donkeys. Should be fun.

Those are some great winter diversions! I've found variety to be the spice of life too. I had lived aboard, traveling, snowbirding, wintering over. But opening yourself up to more than just being on the boat is absolutely delightful. I'd rather be able to say I motorcycled around the continent than to say I'm a "liveaboard" by whatever definition we find on the forum today.

And thanks. I was trying to be funny. But trying to also poke the slightest bit of fun too. Was hoping Newfie was just the right balance. Not really offensive, but not exactly the right word either. Joke may have gone over better in Toronto or Montreal. Ha ha
