In a marina, what food items can / cant be thrown overboard

Bacon grease, chicken / steak bones (dont know about these)

Obvious things:

veggie scraps

Feel free to add items.

I’ve never been in a marina where it would be acceptable to toss almost anything on your list. Basic grey water from the galley, which might contain small food scraps, but certainly not macro stuff like bones or veggie scraps.

As Davy says if you’re in a marina you can, and should, take it ashore. But this is yet another good reason to avoid marinas as much as possible.

What about running the same scraps through the garbage disposal? Or how about running the dishwasher or clothes washer? Even showering leaves a trail of suds........

There are fish cleaning stations in nearly every marina we have been to in Florida and that all gets thrown overboard. How is it different if it’s cooked and sauced?

Well, if we're going to get technical, in the US it's illegal to throw any food scraps overboard inside 3NM.

Nothing obvious and nothing not obvious. Only the sink dish water is acceptable and there ought to be a strainer in the sink. Anything larger than those little holes goes to the shore in garbage.

Hi, I am inclined to think that the saying "don't s***t in your own nest" may be well considered in this situation.

The only thing I will throw overboard in marina is clam / oyster shells that sink and feed the bottom. Nothing else.

I don't want your trash floating past my boat. Why would anybody think that was even remotely appropriate? Heck, for that matter, why would you want YOUR trash floating around your boat???

This is the kind of behavior that gives liveaboard boaters such a bad name in so many places.

Aside from the fact that it is illegal, it is just plain rude and nasty.

Our rule is, if somebody else will see it before it dissolves, we keep it onboard until we can dispose of it appropriately. That applies at anchor as well as in a marina, or even underway. Now, that might mean tossing it overboard offshore, but we would NEVER intentionally impose our trash on somebody else. That's the golden rule.

A great many marinas will curse you for that, because it adds to shoaling. Eventually, the slips become more shallow. It's a no-no.
