Hurricane Season in the Carolinas - Ablemarle Plantation

Has anyone considered Albemarle Plantation as a home base and hurricane season home? Tucked into the Albemarle Sound between Elizabeth City and Hertford, nice marina with condos right on the water and golf course.

Welcome to CF

Do you have any connection to the marina? given your first post is a recommendation for a commercial business.

Do you feel condos are an important feature that cruising and sailing folk want?

How about the golf course? what is your experience with storing golf clubs on a boat? do you use them much when out cruising?

Pete

I would keep golf clubs on my boat only to fend off the marketers.

Re: Hurricane Season in the Carolinas - Ablemarle Plantation

My parents built a house there and have been living there full time since 2015. They love it! They originally picked that's location for the same reason, as a base for cruising. They haven't even slept on the boat once since moving down there. As far as hurricanes go, it's pretty far in from the coast and hurricanes are pretty weakened by then. But if it's going to be a direct hit, they evacuate the marina and go up river and anchor. Can't speak for the golf course, but the other amenities are nice, but there is a HOA.

Yup, as Jack said. If you're not one to play by the rules, or are "unfriendly", which is entirely subjective to only the people on the HOA board, do not live in a place with one, because they will make rules against you and only you out of spite. If you got time to kill and want to fall down the Reddit rabbit hole, there's a subreddit called r/f**kHOA with some funny stories.

Re: Hurricane Season in the Carolinas - Ablemarle Plantation

I would not consider this as a safe hurricane location due to the open nine mile fetch to the south.
....oops,- I double checked the distance,- the actual open fetch is 7.5 miles,- 'still way too much for tropical storm exposure.
