Hurricane Season in Bonaire

Hi,
I'm in the beginning stages of planning my move aboard a boat, but upon trying to figure out an insurer, I realized that living aboard during hurricane season (in the St. Maarten area) would not be covered by most, if any plans. With that being said, I would love to head south of the hurricane belt for the season in Bonaire.

So my question becomes: is it worth it to sail strait back to the northern Caribbean from Bonaire, and how long would it take? If not, what are my other options for hurricane season to live aboard?

Thanks!

PS: I would prefer to stay in the Caribbean but avoid waters any closer to SA than the ABC islands (due to dangerous waters near Venezuela, Colombia).

Re: Hurricane Season in Bonaire

We spent three hurricane seasons in Bonaire. The mandatory moorings are cheap, the diving is outstanding and food prices reasonable.

The marina is a good place to leave the boat.

Bonaire Resorts | Harbour Village Beach Club | Caribbean

It takes 3-4 days to sail back to the northern Caribbean.

Re: Hurricane Season in Bonaire

Bonaire limits you to 90 days without jumping through a lot of hoops with a US passport. You can split your time between Bonaire and Curacao. Bonaire is much more pleasant and great diving. Curacao is better for boat work. It is pretty easy to sail between the two.
