Hull Color??????????

OK you guys, I need answers from those that have "real" knowledge about the color of hulls and the temperature inside the boat. I am rebuilding a Pearson Triton and thinking of painting it dark blue. However after reading "This Old Boat" I am having second thoughts. Those of you who have dark colored boats do you ever wish the hull was white, and why. I will be sailing in warm climates so I need to get some answers from people that have experience with this issue.
Thanks to all of you who I know will respond,

Re: Hull Color??????????

I bought a boat that had a beautiful, brand new black Awlgrip paint job. Sailed and lived aboard for several years in FL, Bahamas and VI. After some idiot tied a dinghy to my stern at crowded dock and trashed the paint on the stern I repainted it white. The difference was huge. I left one black stripe alone the rub rail and I could feel inside the boat on a sunny day exactly where the white turned to black. It was like a radiant heater along the black part.

So yes, direct personal experience. Plus the exact same boat going from black to white so no variables as far as hull design, insulation or other.

For me, never have anything except white, especially for FL or tropics.

The interior will be insulated well so not to bothered...
I had a dark green boat in the Med I lived on for 4yrs in temps varying from 20c to 40c...
No Sweat... a good airflows all one needs... but then I like hot....

Do a search on this forum, there's a long older thread on this which should answer your questions.

and don't paint it red, or any variation on red such as maroon. the sun will fade it out and you'll be repainting in no time at all....

Re: Hull Color??????????

We had a dark blue hull on our Tayana 37. She was a real beauty but it was blazing hot in the summer.

Re: Hull Color??????????

The hull consists of the bottom, the topsides, and the deck. Which do you mean?

I have dark blue topsides and white decks. I really don't think it's much hotter inside than it would be with white topsides. But then, there's so much cabinetry that nowhere are the topsides exposed inside the boat. Generally, when the sun is at it's hottest, it's coming from above and the topsides are in the shade.

If you have dark blue topsides you'll want dark covers over the fenders, or else be constantly taking the marks off the hull with acetone.

I can imagine dark coloured decks would turn the inside into a furnace.
