Re: How many kilowatts per day do you use?

I believe houses are much better insulate on a whole and I'd bet their heat pumps more efficient, physical size is the driving consideration for a boat AC, but a house one can be huge. Average house heat pump is 2.5 tons I think, that's only 30,000 BTU, so a whole house only has the equal to 2 average boat AC's

My house electric bill averages about $500 a month, at .09c per KWH that means I'm burning 185 KWH a day.
Lot different than an average boat in a Marina

26 ft of a boat.

Endless summer.

An electric kettle, 2 netbooks, a hairdryer, a toothbrush, a hair trimmer, cabin lights.

About 0.1.

Re: How many kilowatts per day do you use?

At anchor in the tropics:
Refrigerator running
No air conditioning
No hot water unless we run the engine
Propane stove
Diesel forced-air heat, seldom used
LED cabin lights, LED anchor light, occasional music, occasional watermaker usage, occasional computer use.

This burns about 100 Ah/day @ 12V, or 1.2 kWh / day, or less. Our solar panels keep up with this pretty well. The refrigerator (12V) is the biggest power consumer, probably about half the total. The refrigerator has better than average insulation, but more would certainly reduce the power consumption. We can make ice cubes and keep a small amount of food frozen with it.

Re: How many kilowatts per day do you use?

I use roughly 1 kwd (one KW per day) or 75- ish ah in 24 hours. That is with a small 120V fridge, cad laptop, led lights and flip phone. Heat is propane, as it cooking. I have 340 watts (rated) ,220W actual peak output and 4 6V GC2 batteries.

Re: How many kilowatts per day do you use?

Mediterranean type weather (cool but never cold).

Laptop(**) with OpenCPN, internet via 4G wireless modem/router, 100% LED lighting, independent solar instruments (Tacktick), VHF Radio, Marine/Ham HF Radio, soldering iron, phone, AIS, GPS, rechargeable Bluetooth headphones, small inverter, Ryobi 18V tools, bilge pump, water pump, electric macerator head, ultrasonic antifoul.

3 x 80W solar panels and 2 x 105AH AGM batteries which delivers about 450W-600W per day on average (allowing for 6 hours of sunlight and the inefficiencies of this system).

All cooking and occasional water heating is butane and I don't have (or need) refrigeration, airconditioning, cabin heating, deep freeze or - heaven forbid - electric cooking. There is no engine on either of my yachts and I have a manual windlass on both. The system is totally off-grid, I never connect to shore power.

(**)Laptop has been optimized for low power with SSD drives.

Residential: Base monthly rate $8.00

I currently pay about 3 times as much as you:
K1.03 per kWh, regardless of amount = approx $0.35 US

No AC, no microwave, no TV or other "domestics" but then that is why we sail to get away from all that humdrum stuff. Biggest drain on the battery is the fridge which uses about 50% of our power but man can not live without beer!!

Re: How many kilowatts per day do you use?

We have a 38' cat, a fridge and 2 freezers, multiple laptops and more. During the day when sailing, we use probably 100 to 120 amp hours (autopilot uses a lot). For night, we use about 80 amp hours. Charging of laptops and other things normally done (if possible) when an engine is running. Luckily we have lots of solar and battery, but at times when we had a lot of cloud and rain and not move, we started to get low.

Kw being a unit of power, So 1kW per day, which is quite proper usage BTW. Not to be confused with kWh which is a unit of energy... two different thingys.

Thanks.

Please explain to SC the difference between your 1 kwh/day and her "1 kwd (KW per day)"

"power per day" ? is that sort of like "knots per day" ?
