Re: How Do You Deal with Residency / Taxes / Mail ?

Still

Many FIs and gov agencies now employ blacklisting database services to prevent the use of addresses from letterbox / mail forwarding businesses being used as your legal residence / domicile.

Since we're opening up a 12 year old thread ... I just went through this with one of my financial institutions and St. Brendan's. The credit card company's site said that they could not accept my address change as it was a registered mail receiving company. I contacted their customer service with the idea of telling them what they could do with their card (they need me more than I need them), and miraculously, customer service put in an override so that 411 Walnut St. is now acceptable for my account. It does not hurt to ask for an exception.

At the same time, I contacted St. Brendan's for advice (they really understand customer service), and they said that we could use their warehouse location which is no longer at 411 Walnut St, by the way, for such occassions.

Just want to clear something up here so nobody gets in trouble. If you are a US citizen or permanent resident, regardless of where in the world you travel or live, you are liable for both filing and paying taxes on your worldwide income.

Yeah, I'm dealing with this problem now. The number doing so is increasing on a monthly basis and banks/brokerages are refusing to open/freezing/closing accounts. Not sure what to do next year when the full time cruising life starts. Maybe a bank account in the Caribbean?

Just use a trusted friend's real residential home address as your legal domicile

Execute a lease on a bedroom for $1/mo. Get paper statements and bills sent there in your name to get your RealID DL established.

Use that for your legal domicile - taxes, voter reg, jury duty, "garage" address for insurance

Use the letterbox service as a Mailing Address only, not residential domicile.

Offshore accounts just lead to greater complications, this is not a reason to use them.
