Re: How Big ( or Small ) Was Your First Liveaboard Boat ?

My first live aboard was a 1975 Grampian 26. I bought her while house sitting my parents place, and when they returned nonchalantly told them I was moving and gave them the address of the marina and slip number. I did not however tell them it was a marina.

Needless to say father was not impressed when they decided to visit one day.

I spent a year and a half on board, and loved it. Not too small, not too big, even if I did end up with Twofootitis and went from there to a 32, then a 31 and now a 38 foot boat.

That's me some 32 years ago.

Re: How Big ( or Small ) Was Your First Liveaboard Boat ?

If you comparing the amount of space/ft of boat a cat would make a better live aboard, but if you are comparing cost, a cat is waaaaay more expensive to buy and then more expensive to keep.
The cat vs mono thread is one of the most volatile, some people just can't accept the fact that what might be ideal for one person would not work for another.

Re: How Big ( or Small ) Was Your First Liveaboard Boat ?

1984 Camper & Nicholson 58 Ketch.
55,000 disp.
15'-7" beam
80 feet bridge clearance.
Hurricane damaged in IVAN. We shipped it to the Great Lakes and have been sailing and restoring for 6 years.

Retire, move on and abandon the dirt, house, cars in the summer of 2014.
We wanted a boat with enough size and mass to be comfortable and to make good speed. Roxy was sailed blue water by previous owners almost continuously. It is well equipped. It is a proven survivor of an ill-timed Hurricane Grace while sailing from Bermuda to BVI by the original owner.
