homeless liveaboards and snailmail

My wife and I have sold our business and are in the process of selling our home and are planning on moving on board our boat. We are now thinking ahead and wondering how others have handled the snailmail for important documents, such as taxes and other bills. I know that alot can be done electronically, however, there are always agencies that rely on the US mail system. Like the IRS. Even the Coast Guard asks for a physical address for vessel registration.

I would like to here from others what they have done.

i ignore snail mail--nly thing comes that way is from us gummingkt an d taxes.
i have san diego --downwind marine hold mine, a neighbor goes there and sorts and pitches .....

for those with interest in receiving snail mail there are mail services available, most notorious/famous being st brendans isle..i dont know how--only heard of it , i dont use it, and there are relatives to receive and sort if you still have parents or siblings or friends.....

i also have mail receipt in marinas as i go--their address is good for receipt of usmail.



by law and practicality, all liveaboards are technically homeless. we in usa also give up 3-4 of our allegedly inalienable rights. get used to it. is our lifestyle. price of freedom.

Except in Ukraine. You must register a place of residence with government ( if you live there ). Must be apartment or house, a boat doesn't count.

I think that as far as the "law" goes, you live wherever your mail gets delivered. So the choice is pretty important as far as taxes.

St. Brendan's and others also have a web-based service where you can go online and see scans of the envelopes, then decide if you want any of them opened and scanned, or shreded, recycled or held (this is in addition to the general mail holding/forwarding). We used a different company that did this (won't mention name since we had some problems with them) and found that we rarely needed any mail forwarded...I think only our Customs sticker. Of course, all our bills were already set up paperless and autopay where possible.

St. Brendan's is a good suggestion. I have also used a trusted relative. Keep in mind that whatever state you are in now will consider you domiciled there forever more, even if you have no address there, until you establish yourself somewhere else in another state. Some states, like New York and California, are particularly aggressive at claiming this for tax purposes, etc. St. Brendan's can assist you in declaring your new domicile in Florida, if you so choose, or you can just use them for mail forwarding. Where you get your mail has only a little to do with where you are considered resident or domiciled, which is determined more by where you file taxes, where your bank accounts are, where you might own property, where you have your driver's license, etc.

Yep. The house is small but it's climate controlled.

It is a great time to pick the best state like Florida/Texas for tax purposes ie both have very low taxes.

Another benefit to using SBI. FL has no personal income tax and no personal property tax (like boats) so cheap to maintain as your legal residence.
