If the OP does mean what he puts on the stern, and a tax safety is sought, sure Texas is a good choice. I'm from Texas. No income taxes in Texas, and it's not a place where larger boats make up a significant source of property tax so they aren't looking for you.

If you're seriously planning to cruise the "Islands" etc, Corpus Christi isn't a great place to base AT ALL! I love it down there, but it's a serious effort to get anywhere, either a very long slog across the Gulf or an even more onerous trip east in the ICW. Mexico "seems" right there, but the ports are small, spaced out, and the border areas are the worst places to be in Mexico. I'd go to far southern Mexico, but not the areas close to Texas. IMHO

Re: home port or not?

Check state income tax, sales tax and property tax before deciding.

Before I bought my boat I asked the tax collector in Laramie if I would owe any sort of tax on it to the state of WY. She said when are you bringing it to WY? I said never. She said until you bring it into the state it is none of our business. I LOVE Wyoming!
