Re: Help us settle the Air Conditioner debate

We bought a new Lagoon 450.

We have the genset. We do not have AC. We are in the eastern Carib.

Like many have said, the only time I have ever wanted to turn on the AC is when at a marina - *and* I cannot face into the wind (many marinas have the option to still face the breeze).

As an option from Lagoon it was at ~$25-30k. We have stayed in a marina without facing the wind about 7 total days. So that AC would have cost about $4,000 per night.

Cheaper to go to a 5-star resort.

If I was going to have it tied up in a marina and not face the wind, get the AC.

But why buy a nice cat and then tie it down?

It is not a question of resale value , but one of resale speed. A fully equipped boat at a fair price will probably sell faster than a sparsely equipped one. How many months do you want to keep paying for your boat once you make the decision to sell?

Boats are notorious for their lack of selling speed. Sure an AC boat *might* sell faster than a non AC boat. But $30k will buy you between 15 and 30 months of holding time. It simply is not an easy question. If you are going to use the AC a lot, then buy the AC.

Not being argumentative, but they asked for strong opinions. Buying the AC for someone is not an opinion I would get behind.

I think the OP has been given much valuable information. This includes the reasons why to choose AC and why not to have AC. The predominant answer has been to have AC available at the dock, but it's not necessary at anchor.

The final answer is that it's the cruiser's choice!

Based on everything I've heard from you guys, it's going in the manufacturer's invoice. The Skipper just doesn't know it yet ;-)
OPs conclusion is quoted above...Skipper still in denial over this decision but I'm sure that will pass

Always good to learn what decision an OP makes from threads like this... where there are many factors for consideration and "it depends" is about as close to consensus as the thread can get.

But in this case... ROFL!

Great feedback!!!

Re: Help us settle the Air Conditioner debate

Since there hasn't been a lot of sun and not much is forecast for 8 days I have the generator on to charge the batteries. That's a small load on the generator so I turned on the air conditioning.

It's nice in the boat!

Very informative thread. I myself can't imagine having to endure the heat if it isn't windy.

We spend a lot of time in tropical climates and we keep the boat cooled to 72 degrees F. We're fine in warm and humid weather when outside the cabins or our home but inside and for sleep at night, we want it cool (and dry).

Re: Help us settle the Air Conditioner debate

I suppose that with a price tag for the AC option of $25-30K - the decision may be easier (or harder?)

Guess it has to do with the size/complexity of the boat, how many BTUs are needed, and how much of the work you can do yourself.

From what I can see with just a quick browse, I could get 10-16,000 BTUs for under $2,000, pump for another $200, hoses, but and pieces, etc for less than $500. 'Course, I'm talking about a smaller boat, but maybe shopping around will save some $$$ as opposed to forking over $25-$30K.

Yes but now that your sporty around in that shiny new fancy boat! I bet you are hanging to the air con along with a cold martini in your hand! In fact do you ever get the sails up?
